I guess the only dumb question left to ask is, since I'm coming from 16x8x8 from my 1080ti->980ti->1080ti-> since my current board had a bad PCIE slot, would I see any noticeable diff with 16x16 on them?

Thats the question of the day.

Tell you what, gimme a few minutes to replicate my setting and run a 3D mark.

I had two 1080 Ti cards at X16 X16 then added two 900Ps in a raid0 for a boot drive which knocked my second card back to X8. From what ive read the difference in less than 5% which I can deal with.
Be back in a few

Lol... NOW you ask that question? wink.gif

As I mentioned, in games - likely not much if at all *YET.

https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2488-pci-e-3-x8-vs-x16-performance-impact-on-gpus

In computes - a solid "depends" - how many times your tool/model dictate a load of GPU memory during the compute? If it fits in 11G, then its only once. Then there is the issue of the ratio of that time to the compute time...

Again, I suspect you'd be hard pressed to see any significant difference, but good to test it if you can in your desired applications. (remember those little switches on the MB that disable PCIe slots? NOW IS THE TIME!)

Damn you guys are quick I literally edited as soon as I hit post ,

The is was the part I added in

"So based on your diagram I have cards in slots 1 , 2 and 4 w/ the sound card in the 5th ( just going by the #'s vs x4 ) in order to get the 16x8x16 I have to do 16x16x8
basically doing slots 1, 4 and 5 correct?"

Just wanted to clarify one last time.

I would clarify that as (for the PCIEx16/x8 lanes - ignoring the x4):
x16x0x16x8

PCIEx16/x8_1 = x16 (metal reinforced full-length slot)
PCIEx8_2 = EMPTY (metal reinforced full-length slot)
PCIEx4_1 = Sound card or empty (black - half length slot)
PCIEx16/x8_3 = x16 (metal reinforced full-length slot)
PCIEx8_4 = x8 (metal reinforced full-length slot)

Alright, time to get all the tools out again,

Results are in FS Ultra

X16 X8 13,863
https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/23400634

X16 X16 14.013
https://www.3dmark.com/fs/13943087

Exactly 50 points difference.

Then went back and ran again, forgot I had windows open, and back ground apps

Second pass with fluff shut down is actully better than the X16. That was run with the same clocks and same background apps shut down.

X16, X8 14,037 24 ponts better
https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/23400775

All 3 well within the margin of error of 1%

Edit:
Dont have the first one showing second card at X16 but here is just now showing it at X8

Thats good enough for me, I only play 1 game atm at 4k anyways.

I think right now I'm just looking for a reason NOT to have to tear down the loop is all....

Much appreciated thank you.

If I were sitting where you are.....I wouldn't change anything. The 1080s dont even saturate the PCIe x8 bandwidth and the 1080 Ti's are teetering on it and if you decide to add a 4th card only one will be at X16 anyhow.

Curious to see what you get with 3 compared to two with Nvidia saying they dont officially support more than 2 pascals in SLI.

Oh its just 2x 1080ti's and 1 980ti ( for accessory monitors ) The only thing I noticed was the b/w in x8 vs 16 when using AIDA but other than that the only thing I can think of is scaling for high end games.

Edit

Gonna tear it down later once I order the proper parts, I don't wanna do any more "make shift" bends lol... for now I'll concentrate on ensuring everythings working and work on clocks, then RAM, by mid week I'll probably tear it down and move stuff around.

@cekim I'll share results on RAM with you

@cpt_spig since we both have the same chips looking forward to sharing results.

K off to a fun start

Soon as I enter bios PC locks up about 5-10 seconds later, all input doesn't work. Hmmm... where to begin.

Board shows code A9 but I have video and all.

Also damn, no lights on the EK monoblock, its plugged in, hopefully its just a setting I need to enable..

Updated BIOS already? Had freezing issues with initial BIOSes.
