Seagate barracuda pro - weird heartbeat noise??

Thread Starter
Hey guys i recently brought a sea-gate barracuda pro 4TB iv'e tested the SMART and its passed, but its making this really loud and annoying heart beat noise whenever i run MSI Command center.

I found someone who has the same noise here and theres is caused by HWinfo i believe, so i dont know if its some kind of diagnostics tool used on the drive.

its really odd never heard anything like it, i might just RMA it but wanted to see if anyone knew why this was, thanks guys.

Its probably just the program repeatedly accessing the harddrive, causing the actuators to thump.

How is your HDD mounted? Looks like its just directly screwed in the metal cage?

yeah i'm hoping its just that as well, its just very strange, its in its like plastic mounting bracket, corsair 460x case, there flimsy as hell and it could be them just rattling i had a look late last night and it does have some wiggle and slide back and forth in its mount.

Yep, and no rubber dampening what so ever. Typical cheapo corsair quality.

And I think the Barracuda Pro 4TB has 5 platters, that's 6 arms the actuator has to move, going to be much more noisy than your conventional 1 or 2 platter drives. So some beefy dampening would definitely be recommended on these.

ill take it out the system tonight and test the theory, i was so shocked at the quality tbh never really noticed. i'll check the 460x thread and see if anyone has any aftermarket mounting brackets. Thank you for your help.

That was my thought as well. Drives dont bump like that unless something is telling to access something.

So i took the drive out of the case and ran MSI command Center, just to see if it was in fact the drive bays and at first that minimised the noise and it did seem quieter, but after about 3 minutes it was pretty loud. i made a quick sound recording.

its frustrating as under normal operations it seems fine and just the normal spin up noises when transferring.

shall i just return it? or is that abit premature.

You could, but there's nothing wrong with the drive, your issue is with MSI command center oddly accessing a drive it has no business accessing (Unless you installed it on there ofc?)

very true, problem is i'm just not sure whether its dying or its just normal, both of them are abit rubbish in the end tbh haha its really weird as it shouldn't be accessed anyway theres nothing on that drive thats related to the program.

Just a janky program then, seems like the control software for most motherboards is pretty bad, Asus AI Suite is a total nightmare too.

The thumping noises are usually quite normal, I very much doubt its dying. (Just make regular back-ups like you should do anyway.)
