@ LaBestiaHumana

For sure DSLR will be better. Phones are all about Auto shots. I do not think Manual modes gets much attention.

If you're happy with a budget phone and can get buy on that...go for it....but the arguments of 'I don't see why people spend $1000 on a phone when I can do what I need on a $300' are getting silly.

I didn't say anything about a $300 phone though. I said half the price of the iPhone X which would be around $500. Even a phone as amazing as the S8 Plus is getting very near to that mark already and I can't see much about the iPhone that is a lot better than the S8 Plus. Certainly not $500 better.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
In the interest of trying to not just take a single landscape photo and declare it to be a representative sample for all photos ever taken of all time with a smartphone in daytime conditions, I went ahead and took another sample shot of a mostly static subject. Here the iPhone 7 Plus in 1x mode is pretty much comparable to the iPhone 6s and Galaxy S7 as far as detail goes. I would argue that the HTC 10 captures slightly more detail at the center, but this probably isn't a surprise when the sensor is significantly larger. It's also worth noting that the iPhone 7 Plus manages to show better dynamic range here as the highlights off to the right retain more color detail than most devices tested and the shadows contain more detail that what is found on the Galaxy S7 or the iPhone 6s Plus. Once again, at 2x the iPhone 7 Plus is really just ridiculously good at capturing the sheer amount of detail that the tree has which isn't really captured by the 1x mode as most of the detail has to be blurred away to avoid aliasing. It's truly impressive how the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are actually capable of keeping up with the Galaxy S7 despite a smaller sensor, and we're really seeing the product of Apple's ISP lead here.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Overall, the iPhone 7 camera is impressive and I would argue is holistically a better camera for still photos than the Galaxy S7 on the basis of more accurate color rendition, cleaner noise reduction, and lack of aggressive sharpening.

Yeah... no. Pixel doesn't even have hardware image stabilization, which is fine. Their software image stabilization is really impressive and I've seen it an action. As an owner of multiple Android flagships, iPhones, and so on. iPhone cameras have always been absolutely excellent and never significantly inferior (in fact they're usually superior at release) to their Android counterparts.

EDIT: Speaking of anandtech, I really miss Ryan Smith's writeups on smartphones. Those were the best articles on mobile out there.

Try DXO or DPReview I trust my camera reviews to camera sites, computer hardware reviews to computer hardware review sites.

I called bs on this sentence btw.
Those sensors are both from Sony, using a same tech and have same pixel counts. The smaller one is worse, period.

Exactly.

Even under DXO new standard for measuring the sensors iP7 hasn't caught up the s7 and the new ranking has caused it to jump some numbers.

which is sad imo because using manual mode the S6 was beastly.

edit: this is manual mode, adjusting a few setting quickly and Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Pretty sure that you just need a manual camera app on a phone. True long exposure shots probably won't be possible, but I imagine there's some clever software tricks that can mimic it.

TBH my original reply was a little misunderstanding. I misread the original post and thought we were talking about hardware performance, not camera hardware. I realized it later, but whatever.

I expected it to have screens on both side and not be able to make calls when someone was touching it in any way.

Samsung's Exynos that is about to release pushes way past 4k60 in the camera area and goes all the way to 4k120. Both chipsets have been in development for over a year now and in the end neither spec really matters all too much. Very few people will make use of 120fps recording as it is not fast enough to be "slow mo" recording and too much file size to be of use for anything basic. Even 4k at 60fps is too big a file size for basic recording and people will just use lower res stuff because it is "good enough" for their phone and to send to friends.

From my understanding the s8/s8+/note 8 with exynos chips are capable to push 4k/120 encode. An upcoming software update will only push it to 4k/60 although I read it is a little more complicated than that considering those devices use software image stabilizing unlike the iphone x's hardware image stablization to reduce workload and heat. I am curious how the two approaches compare in endurence, compression, and quality.

The original comment I responded to was based on that. $500 is a whole new category and while the S8 is close to it, it still isn't a $500 phone. You don't get to randomly pick and choose what you want to make your argument.

There's many reasons why that phone is $300 already. Something-something 'huge waste of space'.

The S8 has a price parity on par with the iPhone. It costs 750$ on T-Mobile. No, if you actually want a bargain, buy LG instead. They're consistently discounted on phone carriers. If I wanted to, I could get an LG G6 for 500$, a flagship device that does everything you want it too. Is it the best in everything? No, but it's certainly not bad, or mediocre. In fact it's excellent in every single category. So if this is about price/performance stop talking about Samsung. It's the LG story. Or hell, buy a brand new S7 Edge for 400$. I still have an old Note 3 somewhere in my house. that's perfectly functional and does everything I need, lack of updates doesn't kill anyone.

I wanted the X model but not sure about that top lip getting in the way and I heard that the browser will have borders on the side of them because of the lip.

I hardly use my phone in wide mode, only time I can think of is taking pics or vids. Don't see it being a problem for me.

Got a email for sprint, saying I can get the iPhone 0 for 0/a month with an iPhone 7 trade in. Maybe sales are down. Lol
