I am in the process of buying a 5k monitor for gaming but I just saw there are only 3 in the market AND they all use the same panel. One is for Apple products and it stop at 4k on a Windows system. So fast forward to the other two there is the Z27q by HP and the UP2715K by Dell. The only difference between these two are the bezels (glossy for Dell), the speakers (high quality on the Dell and none on the HP) and the stand (sturdier on the Dell). The HP is obviously a better buy considering it's half the price. But now I am asking myself why are there not more 5k monitors, because if it was brought to mainstream it could fell in the hand of Acer and Asus and receive a gsync module. I can already see enthusiast buying these. Are there any particular reasons why it's held back? BTW there are no news since 2014/2015 on 5k monitors
unfortunately, gaming enthusiasts looking for this high of quality for gaming monitors are a serious minority. There's only a handful of 4k 60hz monitors on the market now targeted for "gaming" and IMO are pretty worthless considering they are like 28" monitors.
Monitor suppliers are probably working on how to deliver cheaper 1080p and 1440p IPS panels right now for the regular business and consumer market vs high end high resolution gaming monitors. There's just not a real high volume demand for the 4k/5k stuff as far as gaming goes.
Once we see some larger format (32"-43") 120/144Hz 4K monitors emerge on the market for similar prices to the current 1440p 144Hz monitors are currently, there just won't be a demand. Plus the accommodating hardware for 4K at 120/144fps is a big barrier to overcome.
It seems like we've moved past 5k before it could ever become a thing. 8k is now what seems to be in the works these days. Phillips is going to release an 8k monitor soon and we'll probably see more 8k monitors at CES 2018 rather than 5k.
These are not gaming monitors that's why gaming oriented companies don't use the panel. It's used by work oriented companies. 5k is quite equal to 4k anyway from usage perspective. It's just 1 panel on market a gimmick. Same with the 8k.
HI there as a previous owner of the HP 5k and the Dell 5k the Dell 5k is the better one for gaming but due to the limitations I would stay away from both 5k and the 8k as well won't be worth it until you can run it off 1 cable That being said 4k on a oled tv is a better experience than either of these monitors for gaming 5k or 8k currently because its only ips and the mouse input ratio is around 15 ms for both 5k displays now the dell 8k has a 6ms and its a little faster compared to both but it can't do the 5k resolution and 8k is still in its infancy for gaming we need stronger video cards until 8k can see the light. Dell went half way when they released the 8k display it has dsc displaystream compression phillphs is suppose to release an 8k with hdr 32 inch in 2018 but with 2 dual displayport 1.3 cables so the data will not be compressed. Now if you are going to compare just pure sharpness there is a difference going from 4k - 8k the view distance is much sharper but the stress it puts on the gpu's is tremendous and not worth the headache currently as some modern games will just not fully utilize the 8k or just crash to desktop.
If you have even 3 and 4 way sli wait on a 4k 144hz gaming oriented display or pickup a 3440x1440 21:9 Acer X35 Asus PG35VQ when it releases these 5k and 8k displays are meant for professional work
OH and update on the HPZ27Q it has a matte screen so the colors won't be as vibrant compared to the glossy dell.

Why would we skip 5k panels? And 5k allows you to edit full 4k while still having space for toolbar and such, so there is an utility.

Now that's interesting, why would you consider the Dell better for gaming? And don't worry I don't have 5000 dollars burning a hole in my pocket for 8k so that's not an option.

Sorry you misunderstand I mean the dell up2715k is better for gaming in comparision to the HP Z27q 5k the dell 5k has 8ms input response while the HP has 14 MS
OH yes one last thing almost forgot the HP Z27Q has true 4k 4096x2160 while the dell 5k can run 3820x2160 but not the true 4k resolution not sure if that matters to you or not. I also just find the OSD more user friendly on the dell monitor and the hp display was just very basic and didn't really like the display as much just my personal opinion. But both require 2 displayport cables for use.
Well the dell 8K is better than both of the 5k panels and its faster response time you can fit alot more on the screen since its 32 inch and at the 8k resolution if you could afford the current price its $3600 right now on the dell site. If you plan on using it for editing. That's what it said on the official spec documents the dell 8ms and the response time on the mouse movement felt faster on the dell compared to the hp just in my use.
4K on like say the LG C7 oled tv can run at 120hz in 1080p mode and to my eyes 4k on a oled tv looks better than 5k and 8k on a ips screen because of the sheer size + colors and contrast
Bottom line 5k and 8k will not be worth it unless you can get it with low response time in 40 inch or better on a oled screen and I can't see it happening anytime soon.

Actually as I said both are the same panel and the 14ms on the hp is on/off while for the Dell it's grey to grey. And yea lol still too much on Dell Canada it's 6500$.

how much are the panels in Canada ? 5k models Asus did plan on making a 5k 30 inch model but I am not sure what happened to it this was like a year ago though when it was announced.

Went trough old news and saw the panel you were talking about, nothing new since more than 1 year. Computex 2016 et voila. 5k panels are not very expensive probably because they realeased almost 3 years (quite old when you realize it) so the HP is 1400$ after taxes and shipping and up2715k is 2400 without anything so possibly around 2700$. Considering that the differences are minor and the panel is the same HP is much better value.

Neither one of those panels are worth paying that much when I purchased the dell 5k it was $1000 new when I purchased the hp 5k it was $857 new
