My Motorola Surfboard SB6121 is dying i think. Been talking too comcast techs and they recommend replacing the modem every year, mines about 2-3yrs old.
I'm not super demanding. I have a router already, my line is rated for 25mpbs. I just want something cheap that will last as long as possible.
If this won't fix my issue, i can always return it.
Cable modems are usually pretty sturdy. I would get an affordable Motorola or Netgear that is Docsis 3.0 and have at least 8 channels. 16 or 24 channel modem if your local comcast connection supports it.
I would look and see if it has a PUMA 6 chipset, if it does, I would avoid it at all costs.
My experience is it may seem cheaper to get your own higher end modem, but it ain't. If you switch providers, chances are your modem will be on a firmware that is incompatible with your new provider with no way to change it (thank you TWC and Spectrum! $120 down the drain) . Or you will buy a modem that ends up having some serious issue they cant fix (puma 6 and intel thank you! another $120 down the drain).
Just rent the one they provide, if it ends up being defective or a crap modem, tell them and get a different model. Much cheaper.
at $3 rental per month, I am roughly 80 months behind if I would have just rented.
Not a direct answer to your question but food for thought --- if FioS is avail in your area.
One of the bonuses of FioS over Comcast is that you don't need a cable modem with FioS.
I have my router (asus rt ac88u) connected to ONT's WAN port using Ethernet. I have an HDhomerun setup as well.
SO i dont pay a dime to FioS for equipment rentals, I have full TV/HDR capabilities on all of my TVs, Ipads, and android. It is the bees knees. Plex also supports HDhomerun and live TV, so i can watch TV anywhere that has Internet.
I've been taking my lunch breaks at 11 from work now so I can watch Price is Right.
Setup is a PITA but once you've got it, you're golden.
Long story short, my modem was fine and it was a line issue that resolved itself next day. Went out and bought a modem only to have a great congestion again. Now to just return this...
