cutting too much holes in the structural part would weaken the table, so yeah its somewhat of a bad idea.
you'll need to reinforce them with angular bars here and there, it won't be pretty by then.

on a side note, since your latest design had the rads outside, why not beneath the main table? you can allocate a thick spot to line them up.
you even get a side benefit of a really good foot warmer... i think its a brilliant idea.


i think moving it to "Builds & Case Mods" instead would garner more help, since the people there are more attuned to these kinds of work.

I moved the radiators outside the main case. Found some large clear tubes for a decent price, the reservoir will be about that long, and either above the monitor or inside the top shelf that you can't see well in this picture. Coolant tubes will be exposed outside unless I figure out a way to house them.

The order would be pump -> cpu -> rad -> res -> rad -> pump. The pump is inside the desk/case right under neither the right rad.

I am hoping the hot air rising from the right rad will prevent a air loop on the bottom intakes.


I guess a moderator can move this to water cooling at this point. Sorry for the migration of topic.
It will work fine. The round holes will not weaken the frame enough to be a problem if it s made of plywood or similar, and has solid panles on top and bottom .. which it will. But if you use a veneered particle board the vent holes could present a structural problem.

The 'crazy' thing I was asking about was moving the radiators outside. it exposes alot of things, most importantly I think are the water lines being exposed.

The vertical supports will be 3/4 inch ply wood. I've strength tested a strip of this ply wood, it was about a 1/2 inch wide and 6 inches long. I put my full weight on it with just a little give, but no breaks(against the grain, which is how it will be on the desk). I'm confident normal use will be fine. I will probably have the supports thicker just to allow more weight for the unknowns.

Anyone ran across a reservoir that large? I found a website that sells clear tubes in various diameters. But I would need to seal it and put the ports on my self. I am comfortable doing this, but avoiding it would be the better way IMO. I don't want to recreate something that is already done, and I also don't want to spend $100+ for a tube :/

Is this loop too large for the pump I plan to use?

Now that I took the rads out, I can thin the desk down quite a bit. Its about 6 inches thick right now. I can probably get it down to 4 1/2 inches. How do yall feel about 80mm fans for intake/exhaust. I could go the full length so maybe 4 to 5 fans for each side. Sounds like overkill and that it would be noisy. I plan to let my BIOS control all the fans. I can set the low temp threshold and speed. I can set the high temp threshold and once it reaches that, whoosh! they would all be 100% till the temps go down.

I am feeling pretty happy about these 'rough drafts'. I not against redesigning this drastically if there is a good idea out there. It's just that the environment has limitations that I am trying to adhere to.

moving the radiators outside is not an issue, and you could always cover them with a thin steel screen.

80mm fans are noisy and provides less airflow, mounting a 120mm fan diagonally would do better for your purpose.
