either way, the extra resolution, plus the extra fov, plus the lack of sde, will be nice.

yea im considering snagging the 5k version. just worried about sde. havent ran the numbers on how thatll look.

They're doing Foveated rendering?! Now that will be interesting, way bigger news than "8K". thumb.gif

yea man foveated rendering will be extremely important for those who want to run the 8kx headsets, or the regular 8k headsets with lower specs.

edit: i derped. my bad for multi post.

If they are really using Foveated rendering then it probably won't be that much more difficult to drive these things. Obviously I'm going to wait until they're released, but these are the first headsets i'm really interested in (the 5K with OLED in particular).

The 8K (really more like 6K) will probably be pretty comfortable to watch movies on/ may even be up to the task of being a monitor! Assuming they get the lenses up to scratch by launch. wheee.gif

yea there will be an optional add on that adds in foveated rendering coming in the future. yea im stuck between the 5k and the base 8k. id really like to know how text looks and how sde is in the 5k headset. If its acceptable, i can deal with it.

Just read some more info, the "regular" 8K version will use the same input resolution as the 5K (5120x1440) and then up-scale it to 7680x2160.

IMO I would rank them from best to worst:

1. 8K X (7680x2160 LCD)
2. 5K (5120x1440 OLED)
3. 8K (5120x1440 LCD up-scaled)

hmm. Doesnt sound too bad, tbh, but like i said, Im wondering about that SDE in the 5k version.

edit: the devs have said the ppi will be better than oculus, but worse than the 4k pimax, and im trying to figure out how that is with 2x 2560x1440 panels in there.

Remember, the Oculus and Vive only have a field of view of 110 degrees. The Pimax almost has double. So right off the bat you need double the pixels with the Pimax. I'm not going to do all the math, but the 5K Pimax won't have the PPI increase / SDE decrease sufficient for my use over my Rift. Only the true 8K X is worth the upgrade to me.

Native 8K is only half the pixels of true 8K? How exactly is it native 8K then?
