[DSOG] Ian Bell on EA and Need for Speed: Shift 3

We made a game called Need for Speed: Shift, we made a game called Shift 2 and EA came to me and said <<We’ll give you 1.5 million if you agree not to talk to any other publisher, to agree any other games or work on any other arrangement with any other publisher. And we’ll give you 1.5 million and we’ll sign Shift 3>>. So I said OK. That sounds like a good deal. I took the 1.5 million, I paid the guys, lots of bonuses, and two weeks before we were due to start Shift 3 it was cancelled. With no warning. They said <<We are not doing that anymore.>>

Although there is no written profanity spelled out viewer discretion is advised in the video.

So?

I wonder if it was a coincidental cancellation, or if it really was meant to screw them over/get some of their assets. Or both?

I guess we'll never know.

Colour me surprised.

(Not)

To those asking and wondering, listen to what he says in the video until 6:20:18. He says how after the game cancellation EA tried to lure his employees - who now didn't have a project to work on - to go work for them (three actually did, but have since returned because they couldn't do it anymore) and how EA also tried to get all their technology after the cancellation, but he saw that coming and outsmarted them. He also names one EA executive in particular.

Shift 1 was meh, Shift 2 was a disaster, pCars1 was meh, pCars2 is meh but looks prettier. I don't blame EA. That said, the NFS franchise is dead. Ever since they bought Criterion in 08/09, they have just been rehashing Burnout Paradise with a new name each year.

I agree, Slightly Mad Studios racing games were always a bit janky. Once I got into Forza I realized how poor quality some of these PC racing games are. But still, what EA did sounds so evil and treacherous.

Never liked Shift, don't like Project Cars. So I don't really care. The NFS franchise recuperated with the 2015 instalment but went downhill yet again with a poor choice for this year's release.

Currently the racing genre and its scene doesn't interest me at all. NFS is on and off, Project Cars is something I dont like, Assetto Corsa uses an extremely limited and incapable engine, Gran Turismo is a console exclusive and Forza is just trash.

The Assetto engine is my favorite along with iRacing's. Assetto is incredibly capable, but it's one of those Evolution sims that you either have to like or not. But in any case, both Assetto and iRacing should only be enjoyed with proper hardware (not a controller). I think I have logged over 300 hours in Assetto this year alone.
