Then, every single time your processor needs to access memory outside of its own limited non-upgradeable integrated HBM (16GB?), you're going to encounter absolutely massive performance penalties. You'd have latency from the "swap disc" being "external" to the CPU. You'd have bandwidth limitations based on the bus type being used, and then you'd have lots of CPU overhead as the operating system manages virtual disc memory.

It'd be far more efficient to have a small amount of HBM (2-4GB) as an L4 cache, and have traditional DDR main memory.

true, but it simplifies the hardware design and makes it extremely configurable.

offloading the IMC to the chipset allows it to be flexibly set to either dual-channel or quad-channel depending on which chipset, this way IMC channel count is no longer socket bound.
plus this gives them a reason to increase bandwidth allocation towards the chipset, increasing the available bandwidth for the PCIe multiplexer as an indirect result.

I've already put a hold on building with the prices of almost everything recently and I'm not even 30 rolleyes.gif Knowing my gpu is 4 years old on the dot in exactly a month (bought on launch date, oct 24th 2013) pains me every day.

Hopefully prices of DRAM taper off by then. I'm going to see if my 4770K can last till then.

Ryzen 2 should see tremendous speed improvements with DDR5 no?

Unless you want top of the line performance, I'm sure it'll be ok.

.

The thing is... They would need a new platform.

I am pretty sure they promised "Upgrade-ability" for at least three years on AM4

Yea, the reality is that my 5820K/980 Ti needs to last until Ryzen 2, at that point I will bite the bullet and upgrade. Not because I will need it, but rather my son's computer will need to go. So, he gets this one, I build a new one. Win-win!

Not exactly.

They can still launch Ryzen 2 on AM4 and have it fully support DDR4 and function just fine in all current production boards. At the same time they can launch a new Chipset with the same AM4 socket that supports DDR5 and PCI-E 4.0, which is likely going to be the case.

Anyone invested now can safely upgrade while all the people wanting the bleeding edge can have it.

AMD is taking an absurdly Pro-consumer approach with the socket and the roadmap for it, compared to Intel and their 12 or so variants and different restrictions across them.

Is the memory controller on the chip with Ryzen? If so, can they make it compatible with both DDR4 and DDR5?

Next version (or 2 from now) could have both. No point in wasting die space on DDR5 now.
