Is Ultra Settings really needed?

I really thought the 1080Ti would be able to crush everything in 4K ultra, boy i was wrong thumb.gif

i was getting frustrated when the fps was dropping below 60 considering how much i spent on my build.

i then stopped complaining and started testing. i compared a bunch of games with Ultra and High/Very High settings and honestly i could not tell a difference. i would have to take screenshots, put them side by side and be up close to my TV to compare.

By doing this i almost doubled my FPS and now everything runs and looks amazing in 4K.

Anyone else using a 1080Ti and scale the graphics back just slightly from Ultra. I feel like Ultra is just for bragging rights because the increase in visual versus the performance hit is not worth it at all. I can barely tell a diff if at all.

I have always (exaggeration) thought the impact on frames ultra gives vs. the IQ of high was never justifiable. Give me high or even med-high with 90+ FPS over ultra and sub 60FPS any day. I want my games to be smooth, when they get jittery they break immersion for me.

if you google most specific games, there will be details on which settings affect performance the most as well as what changing that setting will actually do. That way you can look at a setting, see if you think its worth it, and how much it will affect performance.

but i 1000000% agree people get way too caught up on "max" settings. More specifically, CPU testing in games at 1080p ultra. I don't care if its should be GPU bound using a 1080ti at 1080p, benchmarkers really need more realistic settings for their game testing. You could have data for a bunch of different CPUs + 1080ti at 1080p and have totally different results, depending on the settings applied.

I have a 5775C + 980ti and i still play most games at lower settings, except for a few particular things i've looked into and decide are worth the drop in fps. i could play overwatch maxed out at 180-200fps on my 1440p 144Hz monitor, but i choose to run lower settings so that its pegged to the limit of 300 because i can actually tell a difference in fluidity.

Most games imo dont need aa or post-processing @4k. I shut off those other effects too ( motion blur).

Most games are optimized around the medium or high settings mark. Ultra is normally brute force to make certain effects more detailed, meaning inefficient and with very little improvement. Low is turning off and/or lowering as many effects as possible to the point where it only just does not look completely like a turd.
