I want to know if it is possible to have a 4TB HDD with about 2TB of data on it that I can "stick" in a NAS with 3 blank drives, of the same size and manufacturer/model, and have it "build" the RAID?
I am considering getting 4 x 4TB drives (IronWolf Pro, but open to suggestions on NAS Drives) and placing them in something like one of these Synology NAS: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-DS1817-8GB-Station-Diskless/dp/B06Y4TJL54/ref=pd_sim_147_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=TRBQS678YHF95GPEFFT2
I would like to also know if it is feasible, and somewhat easy to upgrade to larger HDDs in the future and have it rebuild the RAID utilizing the full amount of space on the higher capacity drives?
This will primarily be for backup.
Also, in the grand scheme of things: Is this worth spending the time and money on this for backup purposes, or would spending $20ish a month on something like Dropbox, with unlimited amount of space, be better?
