Still wondering where Vega 10 for servers is...

Gotta admit, even if AMD doesn't really do that well with VEGA, can't deny that Zen is super exciting.

I just want to see the revisions of said architecture to blow the doors off with one of their iterations. Increase max clock frequency to around 4.5GHz and I'm pretty sure Zen+/Zen2 will attract several new buyers.

Also I want Raven Ridge nao pl0x. I want my tiny HTPC-sized APU system. c:

He's pretty clearly responding to the comment directly above his, which references Zen2 and a need for higher overclocks (with 4.5ghz being the claim).

Anyway ... if Zen2 gets a 5-10% IPC upgrade and can hit 4.5ghz, it will be a lovely upgrade and gaming-perfect to compete with Coffee Lake, so long as prices remain competitive.

I've always said that AMD doesn't need to beat or even match Intel absolutely, clock for clock to be a successful player in the market. Simply competing closely, at slightly lower prices or slightly higher core counts is more than enough to earn them their spot. If the current Ryzen chips at current IPC levels hit 4.5ghz instead of only 4ghz, there would be no question about their unmitigated success in 2017. The whole narrative would have been entirely different, and it's already been very positive overall. But yeah, 4.5ghz was the mark they needed to come to come out swinging and connecting on all levels, with the core counts on offer at the current price points. At 4ghz, they've landed a few solid punches to the jaw, but didn't manage a KO, and have left Intel room to recover with Coffee Lake simply being Skylake 3.0 but having additional cores at each relative price point.

They are talking about Zen 2, not the refresh.

Refresh *mayt* be able to change clock speeds but I doubt AMD would spend that much time on the shrink and new node. Money is better spent on the new arch revision of Zen 2. That one they will be able to change their latencies around to go for more clock speed if they choose to make it a priority. I suspect it will be, since AMD knows they have a clock headroom problem already.

If they make a 1700 replacement that can hit even 4.3Ghz, I'd gladly upgrade from my current 1700 that only hits 3.8Ghz...

I want AMD to nudge RAM makers to provide higher MHz ECC kits. Right now if you want performance AND ECC for your Threadripper workstation, well, tough luck, you have no options. It's a black and white choice. No middle ground. This along with the other node improvements (higher clocks), PCIe 4.0, etc would make another banger and add more reason to go with AMD again and again.

Also imagine if PCIe 4.0 would have gone 100W per slot instead of 75W. Goodbye cable clutter for mid-range cards too. sigh

Depends on whats causing the clock wall because we already see that number of cores matter litte till you get to server level chips. TR managed to bump up to 4.2 from 4 with what seems very minor tweaks and they have a higher core count.

With Zen it seems to be an arch limit more so than a thermal or power consumption/VRM issue... Though I'm not that knowledgeable. So what I'm wondering is if this refresh is simply a TR style tweak and we'll see a small mhz boost or will we see a little more.

I'm very interested in seeing what the next few iterations of the Zen arch brings. Did they hit a hard wall with the arch that will take time to iron out leaving Intel able to widen the gap again? Will AMD make some impressive improvements to Zen ala Phenom II style (or better) and fully catch up to Intel? Will they pull and absolute miracle and surpass Intel again? And another thing I wonder is if Intel now having time to regroup couldn't bump or alter their roadmap and pull ahead. Though that new HEDT i3 has me wondering if they've simply lost their minds jk.

Either way Zen bas been a massive win for all consumers in PC. Things are finally looking interesting in CPUs for the first time since SB launched IMO.
