Intel 8700K questions

Thread Starter
I am itching to upgrade again. Currently quite happy with the 6800K but I haven't upgraded in awhile.

So a couple of questions regarding the 8700K and the Z370 chipset.

First off is there a firm release date for the CPU's and the motherboards?

Second, give it's socket 1151, can I use the 1150 brackets for my Corsair H100i with the CPU socket without issue?

Third, I have a great kit of quad channel RAM but if I read correctly, it looks like Z370 is dual channel.
If that's the case would it make more sense to sell my quad channel RAM kit along with the board and CPU and pick up a high speed dual channel kit?

Finally, are there Z370 micro-ATX motherboards being released? I only use single GPU's and it would be nice to move to a more compact case.

Thanks

From what I have heard is that the release date for the 8700K is firm for October 5th (coming up fast!) according to https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/intel-coffee-lake-price-specs-release-date/ . I am not sure about the motherboards. I have seen only like one Gigabyte Z370 motherboard in stock for a hot minute at Micro Center, and then it was gone.

I would assume the bracket would work, as it seems the socket mounting holes will be remaining in the same location as before.

I have been on the hunt for a good mATX Z370 board, and these are the ones that have popped up so far:

Some of the above have not popped up on the manufacturer's website yet, but people have spotted marketing images of them.
Unfortunately there are not too many of the mATX ones out yet. I'm also desperately searching for Thunderbolt 3 in one of those mATX boards this time around and they haven't shown any signs of TB3 support yet. frown.gif

That Gigabyte board looks nice. I haven't used a gigabyte "D3H" board in ages.

What's the point of a hard CPU launch without available motherboards? Odd.

I'm curious to see what the performance delta is between the 6800k and the 8700k. Obviously stock and turbo clocks are much higher on the 8700k but the 6800k has a definite overclock ceiling based on quickly escalating thermals.

It would nice if I could get the 8700k to 4.5 with current cooling with decent temps and voltage.

Yeah, a lot of people are saying that for the motherboard manufacturers, Z370 is like a Z270 refresh so there should be similar boards coming out. However this first round of boards are missing a couple of the nice mATX ones that I like in Z270 like the Asrock Z270M Extreme4 and the Gigabyte Z270MX Gaming. frown.gif I have been itching to upgrade for quite some time since I am still on X79, but my parts have been treating me well, just excited for TB3.

I have heard that some benchmarks have been reaching 5.1 GHz on the i5 8600K, but I am not sure how high the i7 will go with hyperthreading.

I don't see how an i7-8700K would be an upgrade over an i7-6800K. If anything, it's a lateral move. What you gain you IPC, you lose in PCI-e 3.0 lanes. The newer chipset would be nice to have, but you're not really getting an upgrade.

I assume the mounting holes on 300-series motherboards will be the same as every mainstream motherboard since Nehalem.

"Quad channel" is a marketing tactic. You can buy a "quad channel" RAM kit and use it in dual channel with a mainstream chipset.

Quad channel is most definitely not a tactic. I went through three different kits of of matching pairs of dual channel RAM and could not get them stable on the X99 motherboard. I bought an actual quad channel kit and it worked perfectly out of the box with no settings adjustments required.

And while I agree it is a lateral move in terms of processor, getting a 6800k over 4.2 requires far more robust cooling than I currently have. I would need to invest in a custom water loop. If the 8700k can hit 4.5 stable using my current AIO, it would be worth the investment.

The PCI-E lanes would benefit me how out of curiosity? I will never run multi GPU again. I have a single GPU and sound card and do not use an M2 SSD.

The 8700K and a new motherboard would be a pointless upgrade and a waste of money
Spend money on something else like a custom or a complete from EK Swiftech or Alphacool

Or maybe a bigger SSD if you need space.

Top end custom loop would be what about $400? That would allow me to push the 6800k to 4.5 max.

Selling my board and processor and buying a new board and processor, the delta would be roughly the same and the chip would likely do 4.5 with my current mediocre cooling. I could later add a custom loop (which would also necessitate changing my case) and push an 8700k somewhat higher.

I'm thinking long term as opposed to short term push.

Why not invest in one of these EK Kits

Also agree that 'upgrade' doesn't make sense.
