Intel 8700K questions - Page 2

I wouldn't upgrade you already have a good CPU unless you are a baller and money doesn't mean anything to you. The only reason to really upgrade if you want a 6 core cpu that does 5ghz on water with ease then this is the chip for you. It makes sense for people with older gen i7's like myself.

No one asked what his use case scenario is before deeming the upgrade a waste.

Can you live without that rig you’re thinking of replacing with an 8700k?

If so wait through the weekend. Have a look at results and more importantly if there’s a shortage then put your system up for sale. People will justo on it out of spite it Coffeelake is not obtainable. I saw this happen before.

Just a thought. Good luck on your decision 👍

He is itching for an upgrade

It's a hobby to some

I'm not questioning that at all

On topic

I would wait to get at least a delidded chip or do it myself with a kit

Pushing past 4.8 might need a delid
And a 8700k at 5+Ghz is definalty an upgrade

I'm in no huge hurry. The purchase is contingent on what overclocks look like on the chip with moderate cooling.

I can't get past 4.2 on my current chip without spending several hundred dollars on a custom loop and even then, the 6800k tops out at no more than 4.5 typically.

If I can get a next gen chip to do 4.5 with my measly AIO, sell off my current board and CPU, it will be a minor investment and get me where I would like to be from a performance perspective.

It seems you have your mind made up. The only thing you're really upgrading is the chipset. I have a hard time believing an extra 300 megahertz will make a world of difference. You might be able to achieve higher clocks if you were using a high-end air cooler, but I can understand if you are going for a certain aesthetic over performance.

The real tragedy in all this was you had to go with Broadwell-E. X99 in its entirety was underwhelming. At the end of the day, the money you spend going to Coffee Lake won't manifest itself in tangible performance. That's why I wouldn't call the move to an i7-8700K an upgrade.

I got the 6800K and motherboard for free smile.gif

And to be honest, I went from a 6700k to the 6800k and found in games that take advantage of multi core (BF1 for example) that gameplay is far superior. All the while running at much lower clock speeds.

I do game and run some fairly CPU intensive work applications so the 6 core was a logical upgrade. At the time I got it (I won a $1000 prepaid VISA at a golf tournament, it covered the cost of CPU and Motherboard), there weren't many options for 6 core processors.

Honestly the i7-6800k is a better CPU at the moment because it's soldered and has similar IPC , with minimal clockspeed difference (~10% if it's 4.9 GHz vs 4.5GHz).

We have no assurances that the i7-8700k will overclock well without a delid.

I'd wait it out if you can.

Average i7-6800k on water hits 4.4GHz or so http://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/core_i7_6800k/

Ah, so it was unfortunate timing. Same thing happened with my first build. I put everything together a few months before Nehalem hit the market.

I would hold onto the Broadwell-E system. At least wait for people to say Coffee Lake is substantially better. I don't see that being the case. The next new architecture might be your optimal time to upgrade.

Well we kind of know that it will need a delid to OC high

All other Intel CPU's that are not soldered need to
