It used to be printed on SSN cards "Not to be used for identification purposes". As the system wasn't exactly designed to be secure from the get-go.

I don't see need for any of that. Facial recognition has come a long way, I really think it could work on it's own as a 3rd way of identity verification, and using a new captcha like service like I said, rotate your head this way and that way, and its random each time, etc.

remember this from the early 2000's

Although this has long since been debunked this is starting to looks very likely a possibility.
Yes, AmazonGo is resurrecting this to a smaller degree. But with moves like the OP is suggesting I think it's going to be more then just facial recognition
that's going to incorporate all of this.
Driver's Licensing
Medical History
Personal Identification that ID's your nationality, residence, etc
Bank account info
Shopping
Social Status
Etc
All wrapped in one, accepted in all countries.
And all you have to do is walk into the door of a building where you will be auto scanned, id and categorized.
Think about it, no more long lines at the airports. You simply walk in, Go directly to your terminal and the steward will great you aboard by name.

Ok, enough fluff. biggrin.gif

Think about it, SSN / EIN is shorter than a credit card number or phone number.

SSN 123-45-6789 = 9 digits

I wonder how long this thread will go on before someone claims this is conspiracy to gain more knowledge and control over the populace through stronger identification methods. You know, "The feds just want more power over us!" and all that jazz.

I think this is one of those things where there is no perfect solutions and its a comprimise between feasability (Cost, Proceedure, timeline...etc) and how secure is. I doubt well see a change any time soon though as huge government systems are built off SSN as their unique key I would imagine. .

If it's built on public key cryptography, it would theoretically be possible to make that impossible. You'd be able to authorize/sign/whatever using your private key and let anyone verify with your public key without giving anyone else the ability to sign as you unless you lost control of your private key. Your public key could be centrally available. Packaging that into a form digestible by the average person may be a challenge.

Well the first 5 of a card number are the bin code, and the last one is a check digit, so technically it's the same length (assuming the card number is 16 digits, some types vary).

What I don't understand is why in America you don't just require sight of a photo id for credit applications, significantly harder to fake and a passport number can be revoked and reissued if compromised.

That sounds really secure but at the end of the day your private key needs to translate to your public key. So there is another party that must decrypt it and recognize it. So if that was compromised so is the system. Or did I not get what you were saying? I'm also not saying its a bad idea just pointing out that at the end the day it can be comprised, but I doubt anything truly can't be innovation will persist, its a cockroach.
