[Ars] White House wants to end Social Security numbers as a national ID with “modern cryptographic identifier.” - Page 5

the US military already stopped using this as an identifier. they now use a DOD ID number that is connected with a CAC for all info stored on us. and that card requires a pin number. So even if you do get the card you'll need the pin to access it. I thought this was a good Idea. But I do not think it will work in the civilian side due to a lot of system upgrades and stuff.

Most people who break the law don't know the penalties. They know it's illegal, they just plan on not getting caught.

Joyce's comments came the same day as Richard Smith, the former Equifax CEO, told the House Energy and Commerce Committee that it is time to move beyond the Social Security number as a national identifier.

Sounds like Equifax is pushing for a different system to minimize their exposure.

The talk of biometrics completely misses the point. To use biometrics remotely (over the internet), it has to be transferred to and stored at every non-secure company you submit it to. The same as your SSN. A hacker can as easily make a copy of this information, so there is zero additional security over a plain ol number.

The easiest way which many companies are already using is two-factor authentication, where you receive a call/text/email with a random key every time your ID is used. It's not impossible to steal this key, it's just much much harder than simply stealing the ID number.

Why not go a step further and just use DNA identifiers?

Any solution that involves keeping the thing you want to identify with a secret is essentially the same as using a plain number.

Will likely double as voter ID if it passes in Congress.

Hope not. Voter id laws are a waste of time.
