FX8350 or FX6350 for M5A78L/USB3 motherboard

Thread Starter
I have read that FX8350 maybe is not the optimal processor for this motherboard because it cant handle the cpu because the power consumption is high. Is an FX8350 bad choice for this motherboard?

Is FX6350 better match for this motherboard? Will it perform better because it will have less throttling problems?

I am not going to overclock the cpu.

Motherboard specs https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A78LUSB3/

Which one would you choose? Price doesnt matter, only performance.

Does FX6350 have lower power consumption than 1090T?

No. They are both 125 watt CPUs.

Throttling is caused by CPU heat. The CPU throttles to prevent it from overheating. I believe that only Intel CPUs throttle, AMP CPUs just shut down when overheated. So, the way to prevent overheating is to use adequate cooling for whatever CPU you are using.

You might want to look at the FX6300 CPU, it's only 95 watts as opposed to the three 125 watt CPUs you're comparing. Speed wise, the Phenom is a 3.2 GHZ CPU, the FX6350 is a 3.9 GHZ CPU,and the FX8350 is a 4 GHZ CPU, but any FX6300 (3.5 GHZ) will easily overclock to 4.5 GHZ or higher. Mine runs at 5.0+ GHZ! You say you aren't going to overclock - now, but that about in the future?

FX6300 @ 5 GHZ

Ok.

If i have got it right there are cases where the lower end motherboard have been throttling with the fx cpu because of the heat. I have 1090T now and im looking for small performance increase. And because Im not going to overclock with this motherboard. I think my options are FX8350 and FX6350.
What do you think will the FX8350 and this M5A78L/USB3 motherboard work together without problems if the cpu and case have enough cooling?

While that board is rated for 140 watt cpus it is still a 4+1 vrm no heat sink bargain basement board. At least a 6+2 phase with heat sink board is recommended. It needs fans on both the front and the back of the VRMs to keep them less hot or they will throttle.

A 6xxx cpu will put less stress on the board than an 8xxx so you should be able to OC it a little farther. Then, depending on use those 2 extra threads can come in handy.

Here is a source about motherboards. Click on ASUS under the first chart. http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboard-vrm-information-list

EDIT: If you are not going for a big OC, then an 8350 at 4.2 or so is your best bet after you manually undervolt it. I had my 8370 running at 4ghz and 1.256 volts stable. Any board should be able to handle that. My 8350 did 4.5 ghz @ 1.4 volts which would be a stretch for your board.

No, they have trouble because they have poor voltage regulation. The voltage regulators heat up to much.

Any CPU at stock settings will work in any case - if there's adequate cooling.

Read dotll's guides on cooling..

Thanks for answering already.

Im still not sure about the processor. Buy FX6350 put it in and leave it stock and enjoy the possible small performance increase. Or buy FX8350 add case fans, heatsinks for motherboard, and undervolt and be ready to even reduce clock speeds for stability.

I think the FX6350 would be safer and easier choice without much difference in gaming compared to FX8350. But FX8350 might be also fun choice, but might need some work. And even after that im not 100% im not suffering throttling problems with the FX8350. So more discussion and opinions are welcome. Stock clock speeds are enough. Im not going to overclock with this motherboard.

FX6350 or FX8350?

Will these installed on motherboard help with the FX8350?

If you are not going to be overclocking then the 8350 is the better choice because it has 2 more cores which will give it better performance in multithread apps. The single thread performance will be the same.

Most motherboards overvolt the cpu into the 1.35-1.4 volt range. I had one that ended up with an 8350 running at 4.5 ghz with just 0.025v more than the auto voltage at 4.0. This is where undervolting comes in. The procedure is just like overclocking except that the clocks are locked and then the volts reduced until it goes unstable. Depending on the silicon lottery you might get it to run at 4 ghz under 1.3 volts stable. That motherboard should be able to handle that just fine.

By all means use those heat sinks. thumb.gif Some people put them on the back side of the motherboard too, but that depends on how wide the case is. If they touch the case it can be bad news.

Im now leaning towards FX6300 or FX6350 because the motherboard is lower end.

How well FX6300 processors usually overclock with stock voltage?

Which processor has lower power consumption FX6350 or 1090T and how large is the difference?

Im basically asking is FX6350 with small overclock easier load for motherboard than 1090T with small overclock?

I have been testing 8320 with ASRock 4+1 and really you need to put heat sinks and fan on VRM to run the 8 Core CPU. I got 4.0GHz OC MAX on the CPU. Anything more and MB would throttle the CPU.
