SSDs are great for a boot drive, and excel at most things, but early this year I built a new PC and moved all my games to an 8tb WD Gold. It isn't as fast as having it on my SSD, but on a lot of games I can barely tell the difference between having them installed on an SSD vs. a quality modern HDD.

That is his subjective opinion. Not exactly a nope-able statement.

Also, empirically there is very little difference between an NVME SSD and a SATA SSD when it comes to game load time or even windows boot time. So it seems possible that a person might feel like an HDD is about as fast as an NVME SSD in their experience, right? Food for thought.

try comparing games installed on a WD Gold vs 960 Pro...if they feel subjectively on-par my guess is your interpretation of time is probably drastically different from mine.

The WD Gold can hit 250MB/s sequential read, which is about the same as a low-end SSD. So if your game is written to the disk sequentially, i.e. not fragmented, then it would load pretty quickly. There is a point of diminishing returns where faster disk will not improve load times.

Literally feel no difference between my SM951 and my Standard Sata SSD's and the benchmarks don't put much of a real world difference between the two either, I was honestly debating on selling mine and reclaiming that X4 pcie 3.0 lane for my gpu's again.

Nice if they can pull off the 40TB Drives, however one has to also consider there backup methodology as well. 40TB on ONE drive sure could lead to a lot of data loss should it go down. I would so hope that people using these have got their RAID and backup plans in good order haha.

My two Black Caviars (1TB) and the 850 Pro (1TB) suffice me, dont really need more than 3 TBs of storage.


When it comes down to speed, screw SATA SSDs and NVME, its all about them RAM disks. I just wish there would be a better implementation of storing files on RAM modules. Something memory manufacturers should take into account.

Even if the MTBF on these drives was as good as any HDD on the market, the sheer number of reads and writes is going to lead to unrecoverable errors. RAID 5 is dead due to disk size, RAID 10 is the same.

I can see a use in datacenters for rarely polled data, but outside of that case, the rebuild time on these drives would be atrocious.

yeah, standalone RAID0 or JBOD with manual backups would be much more reliable.
and rather than rebuild the array, just copying over the files would be faster.
