I figure a 6 core 40 lane enthusiast processor is possibly by then. I could be wrong but I wouldn't be surprised.

Not on Z390. I wouldn't rule out one on X299, but there's zero chance of that on Z390. There's just no incentive for Intel to do that.

Dang it. You may be right but that really disappoints me. I wish there was someone I could ask at Intel who would give me an answer that is definitive. I've read some articles to suggest the z390 may have that and there may be more processors that work with it with more lanes. According to them the z370 was a hurry up and get it out the door interim chipset with none of the new features Intel's been planning but didn't get done in time for the release. I can't say if any of it is true because none of them quoted any dell reps.

This is correct, but the chipset isn't going to change the number of CPU lanes. Are you maybe getting something mixed up with Intel's "40 platform lanes" marketing?

Quite possibly. From what I was reading the chipset maxes out with the processor. From what I think I read the most you'll get is 24 lanes for the slots with any of the processors the H370 supports. The H390 is supposed to be able to support processors with more lanes - from what people seem to be saying.

I've heard nothing about the existence of "H390." And current CPUs have 16 lanes, with the chipset having 24 of its own. I think you're extremely confused.

THis is from what I'm reading. The processors can support up to 30 lanes - up to 10 can be for USB. The maximum lanes are 16 and 8 or 16 and 4 x4 or some combination. The I should have said the z390 which isn't supposed to be released until Q2 of 2018.

Agree. H370 isn't even out yet. There will likely be a successor to H370 but that's likely 2019 if Intel follows their current pattern. Even most info about Z390 is speculation at this point. H390 is just to far out, plus zero info. Boed might be confusing chipsets.

As others have stated your expecting too much from the consumer & mainstream platform. Intel has no incentive to increase lanes for consumer & mainstream when they already offer that in their HEDT and enterprise lines. Future Intel consumer & mainstream chipsets and cpus might offer more lanes eventually if you're willing to wait several years. If you want to optimize the use of your cards anytime soon you're going have to switch platforms. Intel & AMD both offer viable options currently.

It's highly unlikely that Intel releases mainstream CPU the provides 40 PCI-e 3.0 lanes. It sounds like Skylake-X would be your best bet is an i7-7800X offers 28 PCI-e 3.0 lanes. For what it's worth, your needs don't seem "mainstream" so a mainstream solution seems unlikely. At least Intel is giving us decent entry-level options for their HEDT platform. Threadripper is also an option with 64 PCI-e 3.0 lanes, but I have no idea how easily those processors are cooled with a rated TDP of 180W.
