Cable sleeving supply questions, need clarification

Thread Starter
I've read through several hundred pages of the cable sleeving stickies. But still need some clarification on somethings.

I will buy from the following places,

Cable-sleeving(MDPC-X) for sleeving, heatshrink, sleeving tools.
Mouser for terminal pins.
Moddiy for connectors.
For wiring TBD.

I need clarification and assistance with the following.

1. Does strand type matter on the wire? I understand strand type affects rigidity and flexibility. But there seems to be so many variations. Ex:Alpha Wire 16 AWG comes in 7X24, 19X29, 26X30 strand type. Does it make that much of a difference on which I choose? Wire of choice so far (Alpha Wire 16 AWG 3254 BK005 & 22 AWG 3251 BK005) or (MDPC-X 17 AWG & 23 AWG.)

2. Does Molex make a fan male pin? I can't seem to find the part #, the sticky only has the female part#. I'm hoping to have all my pins be by Molex.

3. I'm also hoping to have all my connectors be by JMT. Does JMT make 2 pin fan male and female connectors? Does JMT make female connectors for extensions for 24 pin ATX, 8 EPS, 8 PCIE? Other than Moddiy, is there a good place to search for JMT connectors?

Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is no point of buying the connectors from Moddiy. Specially when your buying from mouser. Molex connectors are higher quality then all the other connectors on the market. The only issue is there don't make a 8-pin GPU connector. They do make 6-pin version. I did have some issues getting wires out of JMT connectors unlike Molex where they come right out.

a word of warning some terminals made by Molex will not fit inside connectors made by other companies.

If your going with Gold Plated terminals then mouser is your best bet, if your going with Tin, I suggest buying them from MDPC-X or Mod-One since it will be cheaper.

1. The strands are based on the AWM style usually. I would stick with normal UL 1007 or just buy the wiring directly from MDPC-X or Mod-One. Just don't buy cheap 16 awg wiring that Moddiy or performance-pcs sells. Performance-pcs get's there wiring from Moddiy.

Allot of the time the strands more or less is based on the OD of insulation used. You may get less strands on thicker OD wires like 3mm.

2. Yes, There under SPOX series. Since male pins are only 2.50 where female are 2.54. Male pins only come in tin, 98% of the male fan terminals are tin plated. I've only seen one brand make gold plated. I'm not 100% sure it was real gold plated.

Side Note, Molex male housing only comes in White

Link: http://www.molex.com/molex/products/datasheet.jsp?part=active/0008700102_CRIMP_TERMINALS.xml

3. Yes, They make everything from 1 to 40. They make every extensions possible for PSU. I suggest buying from singularitycomputers. Moddiy overcharges you for what they sell. Everything on Singularity website is in AUD currency so if your from the US it will be much cheaper.

JMT Main WebSite: http://www.jmtdg.com/en_main.htm (Not everything is listed, They mainly list tin version of all there terminals). There terminals are gold flashed not Gold plated.

Thank you Revan654.

Guess I'll go with MDPC-X wires. Price is considerably cheap considering it's 100 meters. Thanks for the fan pin info. I'll keep in mind that they're under SPOX. I've browsed Singularity's website prior to my post, but wasn't sure who they source their connectors from. I'll drop an inquiry with them. Thanks for the heads up about Molex terminals with other connector brands. I guess it's to be expected, cheaper can lead to less quality checks, poorer tolerances, cheaper material that warp or wear & tear.

Molex does design some of there terminals differently then what OEM version look like.

PVC wiring is usually very cheap, if you use mppe or something higher grade it can get very expensive very fast.

Singularity uses nothing but highest parts possible in the OEM range. I gotten a few orders from them since there the cheapest when it comes to JMT supplies. Molex terminals can get very expensive.

I use all Molex connectors except for GPU & Male Fan housing. Everything else is molex brand included Sata power, USB 2.0 cable, etc...

You will have to use TE when it comes to "MOLEX" terminals. I also hate the oem versions.

MDPC-X store sells 24-pin Molex connector, grab that with your order. It is very hard to get ahold of the Molex 5557(Mini Fit Jr) series connector in 24-pin range in black. All the other connectors can be obtained easily from mouser. If you need any of the numbers for the connectors let me know there all store in my mouser account.

Also buy all your PWM fan connectors from MDPC-X store, there only place I have found that sells molex version in Black without having to buy 18,000 units worth.

Thanks for the advice about the Molex terminals not playing nice with some connectors. This made me double check my Seasonic Prime OEM cables. The Seasonic 6 pin psu connector is different than the 6 pin psu connector most retailers sell. JMT makes 2 versions. Singularity doesn't sell the version I need, Moddiy does. If it wasn't for your advice I'd likely would of bought the wrong ones.

Singularity has great prices for JMT connectors but those shipping prices to the US. $90 for the connectors, $80 for shipping. I wouldn't mind the cost of shipping only if I spend at least $200 at Singularity. Too bad the JMT connectors are the only thing I'm currently interested in currently at Singularity. I do like some of their DDC heatsink/res combos but don't plan to build a custom loop yet. Likely I'll place an order for the JMT connectors with Moddiy, picking up some other stuff there as well so I'll qualify for the free shipping. Plus they also currently have a %10 off coupon.

Wasn't planning to pick up connectors at MDPC-X, but guess I'll pick some up now. At least I'll have some Molex connectors for comparison. I'm hoping for all black connectors. I'll get a set of JMT and Molex to compare. The only connector I might have an issue with is the 2 pin fan male & female connector. I'd like a black in JMT or Molex.

I'm still unsure with the pins. Mouser is my current go to get Molex pins. But Primochill seems to have some gold plated 500 piece spools for atx, sata, 4 pin molex, & fans. Prices are competitive considering they're gold plated assumingly. Free shipping $99+, plus 8% coupon. Even if gold plated the quality can be less than the Molex ones. This will be my first time sleeving, so I'm unsure if I should go with tin or gold. If I was more experienced and comfortable with sleeving, I'd definitely go with gold pins.

You're right about the cost getting expensive. My estimate cost so far is $550-$700, depending on pin content chosen. Most of the cost is because I'm getting some stuff in bulk and spools. I did price some cables at Mod-one since Icemodz isn't around anymore to around $450 shipped. So $550-$700 for several sets of cables, some sleeving experience, & some fun isn't too bad.

Thanks Revan654 for all your input. I'm hoping I don't need to bother you too much after this. I really appreciate it as well the content and advice you give on OCN.

There shipping prices are screwed up & has been since day 1. I would contact them tell them the issue. They usually give me a code or they invoice what I need with proper shipping price. It usually only cost 23 AUD to ship. Remember that AUD dollar on there site not the US dollar.

They do carry the other version as well, Just tell them you want the other version. They sent me the other version by mistake once.

- Primochill are gold flash if that. It's not real gold plated terminals like Molex. Don't forget Molex gold plated comes in different amounts.

You can get 200 Mini Fit Jr terminals for 60 dollars that's enough to cover all PSU cables, Plus multiple Molex & Sata cables.

Molex uses very different materials with there connectors then what JMT uses. It's much higher grade & nearly impossible for the walls to cave, Unlike some other brands out there.

Didn't know about Singularity's shipping pricing issue. I'd assume it was because they're located in Australia and a small business so they likely wouldn't be offered the best rates by the couriers. They're likely losing potential customers from the shipping prices that's quoted by their current site's system. I'll drop an inquiry for some more info. I was weary of Primochill's gold plated pins, pricing seemed a bit too good for a 500 piece spool. Won't say it's good or bad because without the OEM & spec sheet listed it's speculation. I could waste time with Primochill's sales reps but doubt much info will be gained from it. Guess I'll go with tried & true, Molex pins from Mouser. I'll get 1/3 of the pins in tin & the rest in gold. Need practice crimping before using gold pins. Seems like I'm set with what I need to order & from whom. I'll be placing an order for parts within 2 weeks or sooner. I don't want to deal with international shipping during the Thanksgiving to New Year's holiday shopping rush. An order for water cooling parts I placed with Highflow.nl last year, 11/16, didn't arrive until 3/17. I gave up on it. Lucky it eventually showed up and none of the parts were faulty.

Thanks again Revan654. Looking forward to more of your work here on OCN. I'll start sharing pics once I'm satisfied with what I've done with my rig.

PrimoChill terminals come from China, I have some of the terminals listed. There ok at best.

Molex 46992 vs JMT

Molex 46992 vs Molex 5557

Molex 5557 vs JMT

Push Down Sata

Ignore first one it's Molex | TKG -> JMT -> Molex

As you can see Molex has a larger window compared to all the other fan connectors. If you try to insert a Molex terminal inside a connector that has the smaller window the connector will crush the terminal.

JMT -> HWT -> Molex

*Side note* HWT are very low budget connectors, there cheap to buy but also cheap in materials. The walls tend to collapse, This is specially noticeable with Sata.

These are JMT Sata terminals, Last time I tried I couldn't get these terminals to lock with connectors from any other brand including Molex. It seems the locking bumps on the terminals are a bit farther back compared to Molex & other brands.

MDPC-X Sata version (Gold Flashed Not Gold Plated)

*Side Note* JMT sells two different Sata terminals & Connectors. Normal version & short versions.

JMT terminals Short vs Long. I could never get short version to properly crimp to wiring I used.

TE vs JMT "Molex" terminals. I hate the side wings version. They can be very hard to get out of the connector.

Forgot I had these photos.

You want to go with Molex 5557 if you want deep Black color, 46992 series is a bit lighter but is capable of Glow.

One thing from past experience from shopping at moddiy, Do not buy any of the 4+4 or 6+2 connectors from JMT collection. Since Moddiy does not actual have any stock of those. Instead they will send you HWT connectors in it's place.

Also they do not stock any JMT Mini Fit Jr terminals anymore. Instead they usually send you terminals from Young Yak or some other brand.

Also here is another place that sells JMT connectors: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/group/Connector-Housing/907279_258635020.html?spm=2114.12010608.0.0.6f87bd7123sB7P

Make sure you read carefully, Not every connector is JMT. Only ones that have JMT in the title are JMT.

I have bought from that store many times before, they are 100% trust worthy.

There also a few other shops on the site that sells JMT connectors, Some of them sell them in bulk.

Going with Moddiy for my JMT connectors. Only picking up psu JMT connectors, not buying any pins except Molex. Went with the JMT long sata connectors since I'm unsure about the short satas. No split pcie or eps connectors for me. From MDPC-X I'll be picking up Molex 24 pin connectors and the 3/4 pin fan connectors. Also the Molex atx pins both sizes since I'm not sure which is more suitable for the 17 awg wire 2.0mm OD. Only getting about 50 of each to test crimp. The rest of the Molex connectors and pins I'll buy from Mouser. Going to try to get a full set of both JMT & Molex connectors for comparison sake.

Current plan is for all psu related connectors be JMT. All fan related connectors be Molex. All pins be Molex. I don't do side upgrades during a rig's life unless something breaks. So I rarely plug/unplug psu related connectors. Most of my issues is usually cooling related so my concern would be more emphasized on the fan connectors, fan pins, fan wiring, & my ability to crimp.

Not sure if you have any info about the type of sleeving Noctua does on their fans. Very little info out there about it. That's actually my favorite type of sleeving, but it's likely proprietary. So I'm going with MDPC-X sleeving.

Thanks for the pics. Especially the fan short & long connector window issue. I honestly would of overlooked this. Shouldn't be an issue since I'm going all Molex for fan connectors and fan pins.
