So been awhile since I've posted at OC.

Finally getting round to upgrading my current system, build log in the link bellow.

Build Log Here

Specs are as follows,

  • CPU: i7-5930K
  • Motherboard: ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME
  • Case: Obsidian Series® 900D Super
  • RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 3200Mhz CL16
  • PSU: SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 1000W
  • Graphics card: GTX 970 herculez x 4 ultra
  • Various 1-4TB WD Blacks 11Tb total
All with a custom very under utilized loop which I've got some rework ideas and needs a flush most likely anyway.

Currently I only use a 1080p 50" TV because I've not got a proper place to set up a chair/screen as of yet but I'm working on it.

The gtx 970 currently I just DSR a lot of games just to get something decent but I've got no real complaints with it at the moment.

So I've got really 2 sort of upgrade paths here.

Upgrade system drive from 1TB WD Black to Samsung m2 1TB Evo/Pro
- Must better performance over mec drive
- No need edit loop etc
- Costs about £400-£550

Upgraded graphics card and add to loop 1070/1080/1080ti
- Would be a massive over kill for 1080p
- Costs to change loop + water block £200 ish
- Card up to £800
- Would then make sense to buy a new screen 1k-2k ?

So we've got an easy option of a M2 upgrade or the graphics card which means I should probably get a decent monitor to go with it or a 4K tv.
Which means costs escalate pretty quickly.

Could just upgrade the graphics card but I would not really see any performance increase until I get a 2/3/4K screen.
Imagine a gtx 1080ti with 1080P with no Vsync ? pfft Screen tearing I would not even want to imagine.
So would be stuck at 60hz/fps anyway.

Or I could get a new screen but a decent 2k+ screen I dont think the gtx 970 will handle well.

Someone mentioned getting a gtx 970 for SLI and a new screen but the weird Inno3D card I've got is not common second hand and new is either hard to get or not worth the cost.

What do you think? Get the m2 upgrade or get a Graphic card + screen or staged the screen/card upgrade.

If you're still running a mechanical hard drive I would not upgrade anything else before that.

Not sure why it took you so long to get one with a system like that either

It was on the to do list at the time of the build however I've been involved with XYZ Since the build not had time to revisit it until recently.

Indeed SLI was a comment by someone else but it's hardly needed with today's tech.

What m2's are people recommending now ?

I had my mind set on the 960 pro/evo a while back but has anything new been brought to the table worth comparing ?

I ordered a 2TB 960 pro for my next build but someone told me that m.2 drives are overrated and throttled by software. Apparently they do great in benchmarks but as far as real world applications go they are mediocre at best. I can not confirm this myself but I will most likely keep mine as it is nice to not have to find a place to mount it in the case like a regular Sata drive.
