[IGN] Activision files patent for microtransaction-minded matchmaking system - Page 9

This is what I was seeing as the silver lining as well.

At least if they protect their patent they will either be selling the rights to use this model (probably prohibitive to anything but AAA studio) or just not allow any other games to use this model (winning).

What's next.. ? Get the "fair play" DLC micro transaction, that will only pair you with players that aren't cheaters? LOL

For so long we've seen multiplayer tacked on to singleplayer games, I think now we're going to see it swing the other way with single player games being tacked on to multiplayer games. In fact why bother with the singleplayer at all?

He's not just a single player guy, he runs multiplayer servers for his Patreons and does play online games (he played WoW for years) but what he says is true, this isn't about the games any more it's about getting as much money as they possibly can, hence the loot crates, micro transactions and all the other crap these companies pull and it has to stop because it's destroying the gaming industry.

10 years ago when we had a paid DLC (which was rare) it had heaps, new weapons, maps, vehicles etc, now DLC is a single weapon, a single map etc. Take Ark Survival Evolved with the Ragnarok DLC, it's half a map, although Ragnarok is free but you get the point. A perfect example of a company ripping people off is is theHunter Call of the Wild, they have paid DLC, tents & ground blinds $3.99, ATV $3.99 and the newest map which came out a few days ago Medved-Taiga $7.99 USD. The tents, blinds and ATV even 5 years ago would have been in the game from release but they realised they could get more money from people if it's a paid DLC, so they are now taking things out of games and selling it back to you.

The loot crates and crap shouldn't be in games, it's straight up gambling and it's not good for anyone aside from the companies that will make potentially millions depending on the user base.

Sorry if my post wasn't clear; I agreed with pretty much everything he said. When I said "As a single player kind of guy..." I was talking about me thumb.gif I was trying to express my concern that good singleplayer games will disappear with the developing trend to monetise the hell out of multiplayer games i.e. singleplayer games won't make enough money for publishers to bother putting effort into them.

Wow...throwing you into an unbalanced matched with the sole intention to sell you ad ons.

I would be much happier with micro-transactions that actually give a good pairing....like nickel matches or something!

Make multiplayer DLC with 50 free matches, then $0.05 a match after that...that is 100 matches for $5.00.

Just when you think the industry has pushed micro-transgressions to the limit, this happens. mad.gif

I'm fine with cash shops for cosmetic items but yeah, this is just a bit too far. Even though my mind goes to Overwatch as an example where this can work but yeah, I can see lots of games implementing this in some fashion. Horrible for the industry.

When i read the headline i was thinking Hmmm... interesting... They are implementing a system where people can have Money matches (gambling), which would be cool. BUT NO... This is just the typical greedy nonsense you expect from these AAA publishers.

Gambling is not allowed in games that are aimed at kids... But at least we get loot crates and such right?

It'll get addressed eventually, when the industry gets so greedy and abusive that the government has to step in...which could take 50 years or so.

lol... I'm amazed people STILL haven't figured out that when government steps in, the "regulated" write the "regulations" to their benefit. Yet people keep asking for MOAR regulation.

It will stop when consumers (and voters) stop being their own worst enemy and pre-ordering garbage from fertilizer companies.

Govrernment has no place regulating video games (nor should you even want it to - unless you missed the last 100 years of government's charming efforts regulating entertainment???)

They are not your parents, we are all going to have to adult ourselves. It's easy and has some perks like lower back pain, taxes and eventually death.
