I currently have the monstrous 2696 V3 18 Core haswell CPU with a 10 core turbo of 3.96Ghz and all core turbo of 3.5. I no longer need all that horsepower and was thinking of getting a Ryzen 1700X system seeing as I can make a huge profit of my current CPU seeing as the going rate is 1000-1400 on ebay.
But seeing as all I would do is drop in a 5960X in my system and average OC is around the 4.4-4.7 range might be the better option.
Yeah they are, I got mine before the Haswell hack bacame public and got my 2696 V3 for 550. I might just post in the wanted section. I thought of just doing a 7820X (just get the ultimate 8 core cpu and hope it clocks 4.8+) build but that CPU only has 28 lanes and the whole platform cost if I go to microcenter would be around 850. Decisions
So many options, I think I will just drop the 5960x, sell the 2696V3, get 1080Ti with the profit, and either sell the GTX980Ti or put it in my wife's new build (that will be getting a ryzen system, finally upgrade her Ivy bridge build).
Have you considered dropping a 6900k into your rig? Slight IPC bump and Broadwell-e handles higher memory frequencies than Haswell-e. You could pick up one of those and still have a big chunk of cash leftover to use for your GPU. There is always the 6950X as well

I have, but they still run 700+. If I can manage to get one in the 600 range I might think about it. Whatever route I might go it all depends in the sale of the 2696V3, I have a great record selling, but even if I sell it for 1000, after paypal fees and ebay fees I would be looking at 850.

I am with you but you reach a broader audience. I had a Ryzen 1600 combo (B350 motherboard/8GB DDR4) and I went as low as 220 shipped for the combo and people were still lowballing to 150 area here on the marketplace. After fees and shipping I got 291, sold items individually (surprise hit was the RAM).

That is unfortunate. I sell exclusively on here now. Usually takes a few weeks of sifting through lows balls
Let us know which route you end up taking. I think the Broadwell-e might feel like you are at least getting a small upgrade instead of a side grade. It is hard to beat that R7 1700 you mentioned though. For the price of one of those and a new board, you could still probably have $600 left after selling your chip for $1000. Not to mention you could also sell your ASRock motherboard too to recoup even more cash. You might have to buy a new bracket for your cooler or a whole new one though to work with AM4. If the rumors are true though, you could then upgrade to the Ryzen+ refresh next year without having to touch the board and cooler again.

I have a monster mugen cooler (close to dh-14 performance) with am4 barckets, if I decide to go the 1700X/1800X route. I will pursue the 6900K you mentioned and see how that goes, if not 5960X is more appealing. Better game performance since it can OC better and don't want to go ryzen and get stuck at 3.8.
