Should I crossfire or buy a new card?

I know this probably gets asked a lot. I have been out of the game for years. My card has trouble running some of the simulators I like. My card is cheap on eBay. Should o just crossfire if I can get one for less than 100 bucks?

You would be best off getting a new card. Crossfire wasn't good on my 7970's and I got rid of them for a single GTX 970. The main things that will hold you back from good FPS is poor crossfire support and the 2GB of VRAM.

You would probably be served best with a used GTX 980 for around $200. If you were willing to spend around $100 on a 7870, then you could just sell yours and move to this for about the same investment.

You could also look for a GTX 1070 / 1080 if budget allows. AMD GPUs aren't a viable cost / performance option with the mining craze.

Yeah, I second that, I got rid of my 7970/7950 CF for a 980, much better experience, even though the performance numbers were similar. CF with 7850 just isn't worth it, especially if you plan on playing any new games that seem to chew on VRAM.

That said, you got the PSU for it and I'm guessing the mobo as well, so you can always try it, especially if you can sell the cards if the results aren't satisfying, with small losses. But if you aren't sure or just don't wanna bother with reselling etc, I'd go straight for a newer, single GPU solution which will also serve you well if you upgrade in the future.

I really liked crossfire on my 7970's, but I didc have some quirkdb in some titles, and i retired them a year ago for a GTX 1070 that wrecked them. With only 3GB of VRAM they don't have enough memory to take advantage of the horsepower they bring to the table, and they are a 5+ year old architecture now.

A 200 dollar RX570 (if you can ever get your hands on one at that price) would be a better investment. Faster, smaller, quieter (unless you're under water), more VRAM, and won't consume 500-700W under load.

Thanks guys. Going to just upgrade to a single card. Some of the games I play seem to have crap xfire support.
