Build Suggestion

Heya folks smile.gif

Sorry for another lengthy post.

I would love your suggestions as I would like to make the right decision for my next build.

You can check my current rig in my signature. I will be building another PC soon-ish which will be used for fairly trivial things. The PC in my signature is an overkill for the tasks that will be used for. However, as I will be paying I might as well get a new rig now for me that will serve me for a while. What do you guys think is worth considering as I've got a couple of things in mind.

I've got some money saved and was thinking of getting a new GPU until I purchase the new rig. The purchase of the new rig will be in 3 months. I know that things do change within this time period but as Coffee Lake has been announced and Ryzen is unlikely to do any changes it's worth discussing anyway.

I'm waiting until the end of the month to see if the 1070 Ti is worth it. I'm also considering Vega 56. Currently I'm using a Qnix 2710 and I’m debating if I want to consider a 1440p/144hz monitor or a larger 4k monitor. My needs have changed quite a bit. I don’t game often. It’s unlikely that I will play more than 2-3 demanding titles a year which is why I’m not sure what GPU and monitor to consider.

I have no problem with space in my PC room. However, I’ve never built a mini/mATX rig and would love to consider it. Please help me reconsider if you believe the extra cost for performance to cost ratio isn’t worth it. Here’s what I had in mind:

Choice A:

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor (£188.99 @ Ebuyer)
CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-U12S 55.0 CFM CPU Cooler (£51.83 @ CCL Computers)
Motherboard: Asus - ROG Strix Z370-I Gaming Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard (£189.89 @ More Computers)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory (£177.93 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung - 960 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive (£105.00 @ Aria PC)
Case: Phanteks - Enthoo EVOLV ITX TG (White) Mini ITX Desktop Case (£82.99 @ CCL Computers)
Power Supply: Corsair - RMx White 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£129.99 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £926.62
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Then there’s Choice B:

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600X 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor (£191.94 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-U12S SE-AM4 CPU Cooler (£54.95 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Motherboard: MSI - B350M MORTAR ARCTIC Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard (£89.99 @ Ebuyer)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory (£177.93 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung - 960 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive (£105.00 @ Aria PC)
Case: Phanteks - Enthoo EVOLV MicroATX Mini Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair - RMx White 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£129.99 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £749.80
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Having considered these, there’s also another option of keeping my current ring, only upgrading the GPU and getting a 4K monitor and building a simple one for the family member that needs the new PC.

I’m struggling to accept that I no longer game as much as I used to. However it would be nice to have the option which is why maybe a 1070 Ti / Vega 56 is already an overkill. Should I consider something cheaper? Also the debate between the two cards I’ve based it on Freesync and Gsync. Again unsure what’s worth considering.

As I don't do heavy tasks such as video editing (don't plan to) and only game as a filthy casual, I do want your guidance. Do you think it’s worth getting a new rig based on that? I do plan on keeping this for quite a long time anyway and perhaps upgrading the GPU down the line if needed.

I realise that we’ll get cheaper motherboards for the i5-8400 after January which I can of course consider. We do loose the higher frequency RAM though. As far I’m aware the higher frequencies on Coffee Lake CPUs do matter?. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Also with the Z370 board I can consider an unlocked CPU should I need it in the future.

If you think that I should also ditch the color theme I’ve chosen for better value parts feel free to suggest alternatives. I’m the UK so all parts will be purchased via any UK vendors (ideally Amazon).

The only part I definitely want to use from my current rig is the 4TB HD.

Sorry for bombarding you with the options. I appreciate your time and help with this.

Replacing your current PC seems like a waste, especially if you will be gaming less. Your current setup should be good until at least 2020. If it isn't, something drastic happened to the market.

Drop the M.2 NVME SSD its not going to faster then an older SATA III ACHI SSD other then boot times and even then its only a few seconds faster
The drive is only going to be faster in synthetic benchmarks or if you use Linux

You can spend the same amount of money and get a bigger SATA AHCI SSD instead
You dont need a 750 watt PSU either unless you have plans for SLI, another note is the Seasonic Foucs Plus series is both better and cheaper then the Corsair RMx

Last but not least the case you picked has straight up piss poor air flow which means the case looks nice but is not a very good case
Keep the system that you have already as its not worth spending that much for something not a lot better

Guys, you're awesome. Thank you so much for your prompt response and help with this!

What could do is just replace your 290x and your 840 Evo and just keep everything else
On the other hand if you dont need more GPU power or space on your SSD dont bother

I will definitely replace the 290X. The SSD space is good enough for the time being but I think it's definitely a good suggestion, especially if there are any deals around. biggrin.gif

There are rumors of a new Samsung 860 series which is going to be slightly faster and cheaper then the old 850 series
Plan on replacing my old 840 Evo 500 GB with one of the new 860 drives as i think the 850 Evo 1 TB is still too expensive
