I have a GTX 670 that will do 4k 60 from the display port, but only 4K 30 from the HDMI port. I have the system connected to a 4k HDTV. I don't use it for gaming, just need the desktop to run at 4k 60 if possible.
Would cable like this from monoprice support 4K 60? If not, would one of those active adapters work?
I saw that too, but I also saw that the maximumum bandwidth is higher than even a high speed HDMI cable, which is capable of 4K 60.
After I posted my initial question, I went back to Monoprice and read through the questions and reviews. Someone asked if it supports 4K @ 60 and the reply was yes. In the review section, someone said they were using it to get 4K @ 60 to an HDTV using a GTX 760, which is pretty much my exact scenario. I ended up ordering it and rolling the dice. Hopefully the reviewer was truthful.
I was looking at the active adapters, but the reviews were awful. If they worked, my guess is not very well. If I can't make it work, I'll put my RX 560 back in.
You need an active adapter for 4K60 on a GPU from that era, no ifs or buts about it. When you use a passive adapter, the card just wires the displayport port as an HDMI one, which means it's stuck at 1.4 just like the rest of the card.

Alright, I ordered the cable from Monoprice anyway. I called customer Tech support, which by the way they are pretty smart, based in California. Monoprice says Technically it could do 4k at 60z as it has the bandwidth. They only advertise up to 1080p on the cable though. But, a product manager confirmed it can do 4k 30. And, they don't police their reviews for false information. So, given all that, either the review who said they are getting 4k at 60 using that cable with their GTX 760 is mistaken, or it actually does work?? If the reviewer was mistaken, then I'm out $9.99 plus shipping.
I am also ordering the active adapter just in case. I was hoping to not have to use one as reviewers complain that it drops out or needs reconnecting or the screen flickers. Just didn't seem like a stable solution.
The active adapter arrived first. It does not work. It is still limited to 4k at 30. I specifically chose an adapter that states HDMI 2.0 and 4K @ 30. The adaptor is active. However, when I plug the adapter into the Display port on the video card, I believe the video card recognizes it as HDMI and gives it the 4k at 30 limit.
Any other ideas?
Edit: Read through some more reviews of the active adapter and came across a reviewer with a 600 series card. Apparantly, you need to make a custom 4k resolution choosing CVT reduced Blank. I did that and it worked. 4k at 60.

The passive cable from Monoprice does NOT work. The reviewer whom said it did is either mistaken or never actually tested it. As BrucetheMoose said, you absolutely need an active cable. The Nvidia control panel calls the passive cable connection HDMI.
