Evga G2 series concerns - Page 2

The old Corsair CX series had even shorter hold time then the G2 does and some older units are even worse
You have not and are not hearing of any of those frying PC´s left right and center

Its a non issue for most people

Are they any list of PSU hold up time just for comparasion?

Also found this review on techpowerup, seems like G2 850W passed the test:

or if I understood correctly on Linus forum guy wrote this:

"Superflower is aware of it because they deliberately did it. They want their PSU to seem like it has better "hold-up time" than it really does. They were the ones who put the 10.8V value in their integrated circuit in the PSU."

So in techpowerup is a real score or they somehow faked it?

Not sure if it's related, but a few months ago, the power went out for a couple seconds at my house... everything (modem, lights, fridge) got reset (powered off and powered on) except my computer which kept running as nothing had happen. Since then I'm in love with my EVGA G2 750. I've already lost components in power outages in the past (ex: my beloved Audigy 2 ZS) and I did not appreciate it.

You did not lose it with Evga G2? biggrin.gif


I also asked Crmaris who reviewed the Evga G2 550W on Tom hardware and Evga G2 850W on techpowerup, does he know real hold up time of G2 850W and he told me this:

"I am afraid I don’t have any hold-up time data for the 850 G2, but only for the newer 850 G3. The power ok signal is at normal levels, so I don’t believe that it will cause any trouble since the hold-up time is definitely close to it, given the capacity of the bulk caps."

For a least my G2 850W I think I should be fine.

My 1600 G2 has gone though quite a few power outages, never with max load of course, but few times at 700-1100W load, GPUs had no issues after. CPU's fine after a few outages while running BOINC too, so I wouldn't worry too much, plus are we even sure it affects the whole line?

^ In the reviews they measure hold up time when the PSU is running @ full load.

In a 1600W PSU Running @ 800W load (half rated power), the hold up time will be about two times longer. @ 400W (a quarter), about four times longer.


For this and a plethora of other reasons, if budget allows, overkill oversized PSUs ain't a bad idea.
