How about, if you're an American, you'll need to use two breakers or a 220V outlet, because a standard 15A breaker would trip as soon as you fired up any remotely demanding software.

Cooling the beast would also be a challenge, though the die and IHS are large enough that they might not be quite as hard as LCC or HCC Skylake-X. They probably would be but there's a sliver of hope.

Won't that depends on how well you can actually overclock a xeon? Since they are mostly locked, we have no idea how much you can actually push them on this system.

But that 16 core can be pushed decently beyond 4ghz. So any program scaling with single core performance, will mostly run better on the single CPU solution.

Sadly no, because every board Epyc fits in has the bios locked down for server board stuff.
Sad because a 12 core Epyc costs the same as the top 8 core TR. If you could OC the Epyc then it would be selling like crazy.
Thats another reason AMD rearranged the pin layout of their socket to make TR and Epyc incompatible between boards.

So what kind of overclocking are we actually talking about? Raise BCLK to 103 MHz? rolleyes.gif Straps? Unlocked multiplier?
Someone on HWbot already did something like this with a supermicro board. 2x8176M processors at 3800mhz ( 2 waterblocks for the cpus and watercooled ram )
2x10000 USD + 5000 USD for 2 cpus + motherboard ( not including the ram / power supply / and his own custom waterblocks )

This ASUS board is going to have way better vrms than that supermicro board so it should overclock higher?

Who's going to get 2x8180 or 2x8180M?

http://forum.hwbot.org/showthread.php?t=173528

The die is increased and the IHS area too ( 7740X at 60C 4500mhz x4 cores + 2666mhz ram vs 7700K at 65C and 4500+4400+4400+4400mhz + 2400mhz ram )
