Hello there, i am looking to upgrade my ram for my x299 apex (4 slots) and it is rated as a quad channel mobo but i was wondering if i could use two identical.dual kits? Is there a real performance increase on quad vs dual?
I was looking at some hof ddr4, but their kits are labeled as dual.
It doesn't matter, compatibility wise, whether it's dual or quad. All that matters is that all the memory sticks have the exact same ICs on them.
But, yes. Quad channel, at least theoretically, should be faster.
Dual channel can send and receive data simultaneously on it's 2 channels.
Quad channel can send and receive data simultaneously on each 2 channel set of it's 4 channels.
With either the actual, real world, data transfer rate depends on the memory controller not being saturated with data.
I remember the days of triple channel memory and it was mainly a marketing gimmick. I'm guessing this is most likely the same thing although as mentioned it should be faster whether or not you will ever use it is another thing.
