We've never experienced a system that felt as fast and responsive as our workstation with the 900P as the operating system drive, and that's largely due to the explosive random read performance at low queue depths. At QD1, the 900P is nearly 4x faster than the Samsung 960 EVO 1TB.
You will see and feel a performance benefit just by using the Optane SSD 900P as your operating system drive. The feel of the system changes even if you're replacing a high-performance NVMe SSD. You will notice the increased responsiveness immediately and then gradually become accustomed to it. In our experience, you will take the performance for granted until you work on a slower PC. Then you'll wish it had an Optane SSD
"Most users- even those with relatively intense storage performance needs -
will be better served by high quality flash SSDs like the Samsung 960 PRO."
I have a 480gb on order from newegg, originally expected october 30th, now says out of stock...so no idea when I will get it. I didnt see much difference between my samsung 960 pro, intel 750, crucial, sandisk, or 850 pro ssd, but optane is first SSD with magnitudes faster small file/4K and the only one I would expect to notice a difference with desktop use.
Toms claim of much more responsive system makes sense with much faster random small file/4K which is a large portion of desktop use, anandtech shows the same increase in small file but downplays it (maybe they didnt notice much of a difference or as they said not worth the extra expense....so, Ill wait until I can test it myself to see if it is noticeable with my use.
Got mine on day 1 (been on the right place at right time). was only able to bench mine on PCIe2 x4 (board limit at my end). Running into a kernel mode CPU limit, too (got to upgrade my CPU).
Drive is dedicated for star citizen since that game was on my "move to ssd" list since a while

That's awesome, congratulations! Would you mind sharing some thoughts on how the optane 900p performs in everyday desktop usage, launching common apps, and pc game usage?
Intel optane 900p 480Gb just arrived. Took 5 mins to clone my C drive on my samsung 960 1tb to optane 900P. after I finish testing the two, my samsung 960 will become gaming drive. Optane 900p boots windows 4 seconds faster ie 6 seconds vs 10 secs with samsung, but loading 4 different work programs, 3 load same, optane loads 1 about 2 seconds faster, rest were too close to call. For tooling around on the desktop, Im in the anandtech camp, cant tell much difference.
The only difference between drives (which is significant) is small/4k random read is 5x faster on intel optane drive. Will do more testing tonight when back from work, will load some games/saves on both drives and test loading times. crystal mark of the 2 drives:

wow, great boot time but the other programs being roughly the same is weird, I wonder if they were all loading within 1-3 seconds anyway, or if it means that there's something else holding the drive back. You'd think with those insanely fast 4k random reads that everything across the board would load faster
thanks for posting this, very helpful for those of us looking to see what they can do
Yeah, I was hoping to hear from users about a difference in windows finally. Figured this drive might do it. I am seriously considering cancelling my order now. Just stick with my two 950's.
With a stop watch I can measure a difference between samsung 960pro and intel optane, not so noticeable without one. I cloned some games/steam onto intel optane drive and samsung 960 pro drive. tested each run 3x.
optane drive fallout 4 start 6 seconds, save load 9 seconds, into building 10 seconds.
samsung 960 pro fallout 4 start 8 seconds, same save load 11 seconds, into building 13 seconds.
optane drive civ V1 game start 25 seconds, load save 13 seconds.
samsung 960 pro civ VI game start 26 seconds, load save 15 seconds.
Fallout NV game start and save start was 8 and 3 seconds respectively and same on both drives. this was vanilla without mods.
cities load was 13 seconds on samsung 960 pro, 11 seconds on intel optane drive.
tomb raider was 6 seconds on both drives to load.
Bottom line it was 2-3 seconds difference on some games, too close to call on others, and windows load time was 4 seconds faster on intel optane vs samsung 960 pro 1TB.
480GB optane will be my OS drive (too small for game drive), and Samsung 1TB for game drive, until optane 1TB comes out. I only tested few games, will be interested to see what other reviewers see especially if any games take much longer to load then ones I tested.
Windows in general, other than faster booting, really dont notice any difference.
Yeah thanks a lot for your input, just what I wanted to hear....for now I'll stay with my 950Pro...but it would be nice to do like you, make my 950pro for my games drive and the 900P for OS!
Even if your motherboard doesn't have native support, you should be able to boot to it with a bootloader like Clover. You just boot to Clover on a second drive or USB, then it can re-direct the boot to the M.2. You just have to launch the windows installer from Clover.
Just got an Optane 900P 480GB installed. Running on an Rampage VI Apex through the PCIe CPU lanes. Not much difference in general use compared to the Samsung 960 Pro. Here and there you feel a slight improvement in response speeds and load times.
There are large improvements in very specific cases however. For instance, if you're in the habit of extracting large multi-section WinRAR files with auto delete archives set. A regular SSD will slow down to a crawl due to the constant TRIM "lock". The 960 Pro for instance can get stuck at ~3.5MB/s for 30 seconds to more than a minute at a time. Basically useless. No such thing with Optane or even a regular mechanical HDD for that matter.
