Weird CPU temperature spikes or maybe I do not understand.... please help and explain.

Hello,

Just built new system.
Bought GTX 1080 Ti GPU.
All is great BUT......

It is probably me not understanding things properly so please bear with me and explain in layman's terms what is happening.

Since I installed new GPUGTX 1080 Ti and downloaded drivers I wanted to make a test...

I started all programs I use including CPU and GPU "hungry" ones like X-Plane ( flight simulator) and Blender ( 3D modeling program).

I started 3 applications to monitor computer components temperature, as on the attached SS.

Now here the part I do not understand.

Temperatures are kind of steady with all mentioned programs running EXCEPT 2 cases.

1. When I reload the plane in simulator, CPU temperature spikes to almost 80 deg C momentarily and then drops to the average value.

2. When I use Cycles for Rendering in Blender ( special rendering engine that is kind of a revolutionary in a way things are being rendered) and zoom in/out or scroll around screen ( which makes screen regenerate is a special way) CPU temp spikes in the same fashion as described in 1.

These spikes must last only second/s as on the graph, time interval for sampling is 5 seconds ( Aorus System Information Viewer) and around one second on Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and Corsair Link.

What is even MORE AMAIZING is that when I continuously zoom in and out , the temperature stays on an average level, no spikes visible but when I stop zooming for a minute or so and zoom again, I get a visible spike.

Could you please help me solve that "mystery" that is caused just by my lack on understanding things?

Thank you, AJ

well don't feel to bad my 7700k does the same thing, runs farely cool gaming and such mid 50s mostly, but will spike to high 70s,ounce in a while it will hit 80+.
what cpu are you running,i looked all over and I guess I'm blind... lol

Thanks for the reply. I am just very curious how these spikes mean and how they affect overall CPU performance/life.

Updated my signature. You should see now my specs in profile

Intel Core i7-7820X CPU @ 3.60 GHZ, 3600 Mhz, 8 Cores, 16 THreads, 64.0 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

i dont think a spike in the low 80s is going to do much damage,a constant core temp of 80+ is still in the safe zone,,so Intel says....
but then i have seen guys on here with overclocked cpu with constant high core temps and they last for years and years

so i think its more chance,,"silicon lottery"

i might actually delid my 7700k,found a place that sells delid kits,,just haven't gotten around to it
that 80+ spike i get really bugs me

It is not a problem for me as I think ( based on nothing ha, ha) that these spikes are quite normal thing but I wish someone explained the process in detail so we are sure nothing bad is going to happen.

It sounds to me, like a vcore spike. Do you know what power safety features you have enabled on your motherboard? Sometimes those can cause this, sometimes disabling it will stop the spikes, but obviously, you'll use more power overall. Try disabling the C states and maybe setting your load line calibration to a lower level, sometimes those can overcompensate during full load and cause a spike in voltage, which would obviously spike up your temps.

Hi Wolf,

Thank you very much but unfortunately I do not know where to go to see/set the features you are talking about.

I will read whatever I need to if you show me the right direction though....

What motherboard do you have? Do you know the model number sir?

Of course I do. It is X299 AORUS Gaming 7

Manual is here http://www.gigabyte.us/Motherboard/X299-AORUS-Gaming-7-rev-10#support-manual

I am sorry to ask these trivial questions but I knew enough to put the lego blocks together to build the system and I am very happy with it.

Even figured out connections, long story.... but in the are you are talking about I know practically zero.

In your bios, under Advanced CPU Core settings, turn of C3 State, C6/7 and C8 States. Then a bit lower turn off Voltage Optimization or Energy Efficient Turbo. It's called different on different boards, if I remember correctly.
Then, Under Advanced Voltage Settings select Advanced Power Settings, and then CPU Vcore Loadline Calibration, set it from Auto to Turbo.

Thank you very much!
I will definitely try it tonight. I will ask if I get stuck. :)

Bad news.... I went to BIOS and I could only find C6/7 . Other items I was not able to find, the terminology must be different.

Is there any manual I can look for the settings you pointed out?

I do not want to change things that sound similar not knowing what i am doing... I do not want to mess things up of course.

Hi,
Here's my first suggestion

It's either that or look into a cpu liquid loop kit skylake x needs one

Otherwise it's delid time

I have this, isn't that good enough?

Hi,
Probably will workout
I only posted what you might try if temps seem higher than expected
