I've read every single one of those articles. I never once said SC2 was thriving, but it wasn't because it was bad, it's because people don't want ultra hard to be pro games that involve personal responsibility. SC1 was out in an era where hard games were still cool, now days people would rather sit back, play some league of legends and blame their teammates for their shortcomings

I was involved with the entire SC2 scene since the very beginning, I was there for the rise and fall, but the game has always been nothing short of fantastic. I also was playing Starcraft 1 at high level since the game came out. I was involved with some of the most famous communities that ever existed for it, and I even played on Kali.net before you could play on battle.net with routers. I've spent years of my life playing both of those games, but once SC2 came out besides like 2~ unit designs I never looked back at SC1. People have rose colored glasses for it, period.

Oh, I've also beat pro players in SC1 and 2, won tournaments. I think I have a valid opinion here.

Logic falls short due to Brood War still having the ability to thrive.

They built a game off of Brood War's least popular game mode. That is why it failed. You are right, people don't want to play the game.

Brood War isn't thriving, but it had the ability to garner massive viewership recently. Definitely larger in Korea.

RTS refuses to adapt. Going free to play is a step in the right direction.

Due to the success of Hearthstone, I refuse to believe any genre of game can fail due to genre itself.

SC2 with the humans campaign came out in july 2010.
The zerg campaign came out in march 2013.
The third campaign came out in november 2015.
So it is not like blizzard did nothing since its release.

While I enjoyed playing StarCraft 2 and consider it one of the best RTS games, I got really tired of it and don't see myself coming back to it ever again. The fact that they divided the campaign in three different expansions (games) and constantly made major changes to the game and its balance kind of ruined it for me. The decision to make it free to play is like meh, whatever, do as you wish as I am no longer interested in all of this.

Blizzard also butchered StarCraft's story and came way too late with proper additional content for the game and did not deliver the improvements the game was in need of, most noticeably from a technical perspective.

SC1 had an international attention in 1999-2003, because I remember to be aware of some big tournaments taking place in eastern Europe.

Since release of Warcraft III, and later WoW some players went to very few Warcraft III tournaments which took place and were considered to be "the next big RTS" but it hardly get that much attention. Partially because of hardware restrictions at that time - playing it smoothly was not possible for many potential players. Other group moved to WoW and MMORPGs and never looked back.

Slight change came with original Dota and Dota2. Since 2004 were those tournamenst no longer focused on RTS genre, regardless it was originally based on such game. SCII did briefly re-ignited interest in RTS in our region, but as there were strategies such as infamous "archon toilet" some people took SCII to be unbalanced and not prepared to be an E-Sport.

Since 2014 i have never seen any strategy game to be a part of a E-Sport. Players moved either to FPS games, some hybrids such as World of Tanks. Main reason was timefactor as strategy games took much more time as few rounds of CS. Making multiple tournaments on one floor, that just one RTS tournament was mostly economical decision.

Even when Blizzard managed to make SC2 to be played in really fast pace (compared to earlier RTS games), it really did not fit well with some of the players, who really were into complicated or convoluted strategies. Fact is that two evenly matched opponnents could battle for hours.

Actually back in ... 2004 there was also some initiative to make C&C: Generals to be interesting for multiplayer and tournaments. It worked up to some small extent. It was short period after Warcraft III already failed as e-sport, but Dota was yet unknown. C&C however ended, and even when SC2 is in my opinion great game, people were not interested in hour long rounds. That was actually the reason why zerg rush was that popular.

Korea is completely different story...
