[Blizzard] Announces World of Warcraft Classic - Page 3

Vanilla had a lot of faults but at least you felt like you were logging into an actual world as opposed to a giant hub like modern WoW. 40 man raiding MC and BWL were some good memories.

Yeah i have no idea what i'm talking about after playing on the likes of Nostalrius/Elysium and seeing random bugs here and there with various pathing issues and just some npcs straight up bugging out. There is also the matter of some class mechanics and talents that weren't always working. A lot of those issues were fixed over the years but never was everything 100%.

I've been messing with stuff for 10 years (both server and client) since the MaNGOS vs. Antrix days(lol, remember Burlex?) Private servers barely get things working properly especially if you have an eye for detail.

Examples include everything from opcodes not being handled properly yielding such glitches as naked characters (no updates for the gear,) lack of emote updates (characters which slide around,) NPC pathing issues, collisions not being handled properly, zone info not being read properly out of DBCs or prepared map data, disconnects due to connections not being handled properly, spells not working quite 100% right, and this is just hard programming stuff - we just don't know how to implement it either as only Blizzard really does.

Ignoring that implementation mess, even on the best servers, quests aren't always quite right or the RP is slightly off, boss scripts are mere "guesses" at how it worked, you will go into zones and NPCs will just stand there (often they were doing something, like casting a beam spell or jumping around on stumps,) NPCs don't have all of their unique attack movies and will resort to autoattack, and the list goes on.

I'd imagine this has been fixed by now, but one thing that always bugged me - if you go into something like Arathi Basin and capture a flag, NPCs with the untarget/unselect flag will spawn while your team controls it and do things - often this never worked and there were no NPCs at all.

To be honest, I'd love to take all of the Blizzard algorithms (all of the small nuances from NPC scripts, map calculations, database values,) and mate with with existing open source infrastructure and server emulators (which are better suited for small/mid servers as that's what they were made for.) Blizzard's servers are made for big iron hosting with special ways how things were handled so they could scale up massively - so specialized, that even they have problems trying to get such servers up and running again.

So many people raid at a Heroic and higher lvl that alot of these old raids are going to be more of "do we have the gear" then an actual skill check. There is so much knowledge out there even alot of it can be applied to vanilla. Yes finding 25 and 40 people is going to be more of a chore then 15-20 but the pool of experienced players will be larger.

Not to mention that it seems like since they are going to be remaking it from the ground up it will basically be a modification of the current client, meaning it will be very simple to port addons over to classic. Making raiding even easier then in true vanilla. With battle net integrated communicating with people will be easier.

People are going to see just how dated these raids are. I mean look at how Naxx was received in wotlk by the "raiding" community. Yes it was a success in the grand scene, but to people taht did BC raiding at black temple and sunwell level it was a joke.
Not even fair to compare Naxx in Wrath to vanilla. All the bosses were either dumbed down or allowed for quite a few mistakes that made it far, far easier. Even the stoneskin gargoyles in vanilla were harder than in Wrath and it's not because the players didn't know how to DPS.

But I do hope Blizzard makes SOME adjustments, specifically with consumable mats.

Farming 30 Dreamfoil, lotus, ice cap, loads of gromsblood made raiding harder than it really was and few players had a stranglehold on lotus market.

Else I think only the real hardcore players will play and PVP ranking will suffer.

Aaaaaand the huge fight over whether or not they should be "true" Vanilla servers or if they should include updated graphics, balance, and quality of life features is already started on the official forums. lachen.gif
post #26 of 250
It's interesting, but having lived through it I was more than happy to leave that insane grind behind... And came back for WotLK which was a great deal more fun. None of this running around everywhere until you're level forty and hoping you had enough gold for a basic mount sillyness.. tongue.gif

... Says the guy who's pet his sub lapse multiple times over the past several expansions because it's either been a case of "do all the dailies for three to four weeks to get access to more story" (my general impression of MoP, but I loved the story and how the entire continent looked) or "grind away in your garrison" (Warlords) or worst of all "I think I'd rather go for a walk RL" (Cataclysm).

While Wrath was my favourite expansion, it did have ToC whiiiiiich was.... 31 days of slogging it through boooooring daily quests (that for the longest of times, were sooooooooo much easier if you had a caster friend with you to help out with the jousting ^_~), just to become a champion and then get to do it alllllllll over again. Yippee.

As far as I know, vanilla pirate servers were by far the most popular. The pirates were trying to bring back classic WoW before Blizzard did, so Blizzard vehemently went after them and released their own to make a profit.

This exactly. Private servers have ALWAYS been against the ToS you cannot steal a company's game and roll it on a private server and expect them to let you do it for a profit (which almost all private servers did) you can try to say some didn't but their websites always had adds and such which made them money. Blizzard is a company and if they can make money off a market ...eventually they will. They have just reached the point where this is a viable marketing strategy over the hot dumpster fire the game currently is.

I am glad blizz is doing this. Lots of people will pay to relive the glory days of downing stuff "first" again on stable low ping servers. No one loses here except people who were trying to profit off of private servers. Well and those that paid money to play on private servers to cheat ( which arguably modern WoW is based on with legit gold buying). Knowing activision they will bring those practices to these servers soon and ruin them as well with pay to win crap but in the meantime if they are as described this will be Win Win for all.
