[TechReport] Intel announces mobile Core SoC with Radeon graphics onboard

Mmm, crow. Intel announced this morning that it's collaborating with AMD to deliver one of its eighth-generation Core processors paired with a semi-custom Radeon graphics chip on one package. The semi-custom Radeon GPU and Intel processor cores will be joined together for the first time by Intel's Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge, or EMIB, a way of joining discrete IP blocks across a 3D, high-bandwidth on-package interconnect. The combined SoC will include a stack of HBM2 memory alongside the CPU and GPU cores.

So the rumors weren't false.

Oh this would be cool, especially for business laptops like Thinkpads where the graphics are usually anemic.

Intel single threaded performance + AMD graphics (over Intel HD) would make for a potent combo without adding additional offdie complexity of a discrete card.

They're using this as a testbed for future chips with EMIB. It also includes 1x HBM2 ( Does this work as L4? )

" Intel says the motherboard area it saves by combining these components with EMIB will let its partners design compact thermal solutions capable of dissipating the heat this high-performance SoC produces. "

Intel fab + AMD tech = mobile gaming PC, that's what i am thinking.

The part that excites me is if they end up moving to AMD iGPU for all chips (esp. DT) that would be a major boost to having software coders and game devs use and code/dev for AMD tech.

Consoles have helped a little but not even remotely to the level many predicted (or hoped and prayed it would).

This could be a huge step in the right direction for AMD to get support. The extra cash would also be a huge help for R&D. But somehow I expect Intel to use it only for mobile, and possibly do a custom that minimizes AMDs ability to leverage the marketshare increase into far better support. But I'm quite the cynic these days.

Another win-win for consumers. Intel users get better iGPU, AMD get more $$ and hopefully better support for their GPUs which then could (hopefully) translate into better competition vs Nvidia which means faster advancement of tech and more competitive prices for all users.

I was quite down about the sgate of consumer tech and the very slow and minimal advancement of tech but things are starting to look a bit better. Fingers crossed!

This is incredible. I thought they recently quashed the rumours? Very interested to see how this will turn out and when it will actually release and performance compared to Raven Ridge. They mention high performance whereas RR is aiming at low to mud tier with great energy efficiency.

Strange times to say the least

I faintly recall something about them having an expiring agreement with Nvidia and shifting to license AMD's gpu tech.

However the big thing to me here is the bit about HBM. I cant imagine AMD will give Intel iGPU w/HBM and then not use HBM themselves for their own SoC's. So it may not be long before we see Ryzen cores with AMD iGPU using HBM as well.

Wow, this is the stuff many have been waiting for (as far as notebooks go).
Intel cpu + amd gpu solution + hbm.. i am really excited for more details.

Iirc the licensing thing with Nvidia was just for GPU patents in general.
