[PCWORLD] Intel hires Radeon boss Raja Koduri to challenge AMD, Nvidia in high-end discrete graphics

It seems that AMD may consider Koduri going to Intel is a hostile move. AMD implies possible lawsuit over IP Rights, and the joint Intel/Radeon CPU may not happen now without a court battle.

AMD, who will now have to find a replacement for Koduri, seemed to imply that the newfound spirit of detente that began Monday with a joint Intel Core-AMD Radeon chip may be over. Now, the two companies could be back at it in court. “We have a very strong graphics team and will continue our focus on building great products," an AMD spokesman said in a statement to VentureBeat. "We also have industry-leading graphics [intellectual property] IP and, if necessary, will vigorously defend it.”

In addition, an AMD spokesman told PCWorld: "It is standard practice for all AMD employees to sign an agreement that includes post-employment confidentiality and non-solicitation obligations. Other companies are familiar with this requirement and they understand their legal obligation to protect and maintain the confidentiality of AMD’s information and ensure compliance with non-solicitation obligations. AMD fully anticipates that any well-represented and well-advised company would not seek to taint their own intellectual property by attempting to use or access AMD’s confidential information or IP. The industry is well aware that AMD has industry-leading graphics IP and, if necessary, we will vigorously defend it."

Could be a typical response to loaded questions from the news, or it might suggest Raja was poached and given the rumors, possibly mutinous.

Really sketchy...

So basically, people are implying that Raja who was head of RTG at the time signed a contract with Intel to license their GPU technology to Intel. Then shortly after he goes to Intel in order to steal AMD GPU tech? Wow...

If this is true and I was AMD, I would be livid. I don't know how much complete independence his contract gave him, but this is sketchy as heck.

No its AMD stating that he signed a "post employment contract" with them, agreeing to protect their IP Rights after leaving AMD.
It was probably a contract he signed years ago when AMD first hired him.

But now with him going to Intel, this contract kicks into effect and binds him to not share or reveal any of their tech secrets with Intel.

It seems that AMD, by implying this to be the case, may be concerned that this could potentially happen.

Something smells. There are a lot of coincidences with his quitting and being hired.

Can't blame the guy. His hands were tied with the tiny budget for Polaris and Vega. Now he's in a bigger playground -- but will need new toys, because AMD claims ownership over his old ones.

where is source for that quote? no AMD representant claimed that

also news claims "A spokesperson for AMD opined"

Sounds like your typical media PR newspeak as usual. If the Intel-AMD Semi-custom project has gone this far already in the current state progress why even retract it at all after all that engineering work and pre-production samples has been done.

Remember even AMD PR response to the Kyle's rumor about semi-custom graphics deal was hogwash and everyone believed it a year ago. Now it turns out to be very real after all. With all due respect to Raja, I understand him jumping ships especially with the amount of backroom politics he likely went through prior to his long leave. Leadership within RTG itself is to blame as well on such shortcomings on the performance side when you tease your market audience and competitor a new product with intentions of releasing it a year late or later under-performing against a very competitive competitor. Basically how to loose marketshare 101 lol.

The deal is already signed long ago and I don't see any good reason to cease this positive semi-custom deal. If it happens I only see AMD shooting themselves in the foot here as they'll be locked out both sides of the market graphics wise. And besides AMD APUs will always be garbage next to Intel's IGPs until they push out a similar solution such as this.

Corpopolitics aside props to Intel-AMD for making this happen. I'm sure a ton of people including myself been wanting to see proper integrated mobile graphics without the terrible bottlenecks that have plagued it. An APU/CPU with Graphics+HBM is all I wanted before coming back to the laptop market after 10 years since my last dead laptop.

Quite the circus this week has become in the tech industry haha.

He will also expand Intel’s position in integrated graphics for the PC market and work on moving Intel into the high-end discrete graphics chip market. That part of the job will be in direct competition with AMD and Nvidia. In my opinion, that might put Koduri at risk for possible violation of trade secrets, should AMD wish to pursue that claim. I would expect that to happen if this were like the 1990s, when AMD and Intel were locked in litigation over tech copying.

In a statement, a spokesman for AMD said, “We have a very strong graphics team and will continue our focus on building great products. We also have industry-leading graphics [intellectual property] IP and, if necessary, will vigorously defend it.”

Talk about taking things out of context... then again it is PCWorld...

The real question is how can anyone so deeply involved in graphics technology possibly not rely on and use what they learned at their previous job when the new job is to do exactly what the old job was a week ago and for a competitor? Nobody could possibly mentally partition themselves so that they're honestly able to continue in good faith without applying now-stolen knowledge.
