FrozenCPU Review and squirrels about PCS and modmymods

Thread Starter
I have known about this company for years, as they are local. This past year was the first time I bought anything from them as I am new to the custom cooling arena.

At first I was a little apprehensive as I read a lot of bad flack they got, when they abruptly closed down. Rumor has it the founder apparently had some issue and trashed the place and fired all of the staff. Granted they reopened since then. I decided to give it a shot as it was local, on the way home from work, and the parts I needed were a few bucks cheaper than Newegg/Amazon.

The place is located in a small industrial unassuming area of East Rochester. It was not setup like a Microcenter or a Frys, it was more like a small warehouse with a counter and some small products up front and some tech benches behind it. They did mention that they get only a few walk ins every week, most of their business is done online. Only a few items are really on display, everything else they have to go in the back to get it, so I guess you really need to know what you want. The staff was nice and knowledgeable.

The first two times I went there was to get a simple fan header y-adapter and a Molex male to SATA male adapter. As I was planning my first custom loop, I looked at a few different sites. Modmymods, frozencpu, and performance pcs. There is nothing fancy looking about any of those site, though while the performance pc's site was the least visual pleasing, it seemed like it was much easier to filter items out, compared to frozen's site. Frozen does seem to have a bit of stale out of stock/order able items. Being used to Newegg/Amazon it is nice to filter out items and my only/biggest complaint about FrozenCPU, is there website.

While doing the newbie research of my first custom loop. I decided on a D5 Photon pump/res combo, XSPC water block, and a HW Labs 360mm radiator. I noticed that they had combo deals on some XSPC D5 kits, I was able to work with them to get buy the whole kit minus the radiator as they didn't stock the one I wanted. I got it all for the price of a XSPC D5 Phton pump/res alone. I think I was able to work this out as XSPC updated their res to a version 2, so the original one was discontinued, but still included the D5 pump. I knew about the OCN 5.1% coupon code for Frozen, though the employee typed a 10% off coupon for veterans day. I was really impressed about how the staff worked with me and got a shockingly good deal for pump/res, cpu block, 6x fittings, 3x fans, soft tubing, and some other items.

...side note:
I ended up ordering the rads from PCS yesterday as they were the only ones who really stocked it. Oddly enough I was able to get free shipping by adding in an EK tube bending silicone for ~$4 with their EK coupon code. It required you to have over $99 and an EK product, I saved more money and got a tube bender by using that EK code, instead of the OCN code for PCS. I would have included a review of PCS, though I just purchased the rads yesterday and I have never dealt with them before.

I also heard that the modmymods, which is another local shop. Rumor has it was started by former employees of FrozenCPU. I haven't been to their store yet, though they didn't seem to carry the brands/parts I was looking for, which was based on reviews and benchmarks from http://www.xtremerigs.net. I will see if I can swing by their place at some point, though they are located across town for me, while Frozen is a place that is on the way home from work.
..end squirrel.

Back onto the main topic of Frozen. The employee said that the founder who caused some of the drama is not running the place anymore. From the way he spoke it didn't seem like he had ever met the guy. The Frozen website does list Mark as the founder as well as an email, but someone else as the acting CEO. I would have no issue doing business again. I give them 4/5 stars with one star deducted for their website. The staff and the prices were great!

I have placed several orders with PCS here over the last 6 months or so, and did not have a single issue. I highly recommend them, and I will definitely go through them exclusively in the future whenever possible.
