Upgrade/Old parts

Thread Starter
Afternoon everyone,

I'm overdue for some upgrades and I'd like to build my bf a budget gaming computer as well. I'm open to all suggestions. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet and I'd like to snag some Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals coming up. I'd also like to use some of my current parts for both of ours. I'm not sure where I should use my old ones and where I shouldn't. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Current Build Specs
CPU: Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
CPU Fan: COOLER MASTER Hyper 212
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-790XTA Old
GPU: XFX Radeon GTR RX 480 Black Edition 8GB
PSU : Corsair 750TX (750W)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDr3 1600
CASE: Antec 1200 Black Steel
SSD: 500gb SSD Samsung 850 EVO

Both rigs look fairly solid to me. Only thing I can suggest for his rig is to bump the Phenom II x4 to a Phenom II x6. They aren't too expensive to get off of ebay.

What would you recommend for a budget build of $400-600 for my boyfriend.

I would suggest upgrading the Phenom II 955 to an FX-8350. This is a very simple upgrade, and your motherboard will support that CPU with a simple BIOS update. You will not regret that move, and he would notice a significant performance boost.

Perhaps get a second 2x4GB kit for that machine, assuming it's used for more than just video games. If the machine is used for work/productivity, more ram is always more important than fast ram.

If his board is the GIGABYTE GA-790XTA he isn't going to be upgrading from an AM3 cpu to an AM3+ cpu. There is no bios update.

I was thinking about doing a Ryzen build but then I'm not sure how much I'd want to spend for upgrades on myself as well. Anyone know of any good places for parts besides newegg, amazon, and bestbuy?

Also it doesn’t make much sense to change the GPU’s as the RX 480 is the same card as the RX 580 less some bios tweeks.

considering that trident Z ram kit, which i have. is like $280 alone all those options look pretty appetizing. lol

From what I read previously, the RX 480 is pretty much the same as some RX 580 as you say minus some bios tweaks. Also, I was going to give my boyfriend that Rx 480 and get something else for myself. What do you think I should get? I was thinking a GTX 1070 if I could get a good deal on it or maybe a 1060 but I wanted an 8gb one. I've also read that the 1600 is the best bang for buck and the 1600x isn't worth the little extra boost since the 1600 could easily by oc to around that level.

GTX 1060 is more less a side grade and a RX 480 will almost definitely have better driver support past it’s lifecycle. You would at a minimum have to go to a GTX 1070 or Vega 56 for better performance.

You are correct with regards to the 1600 vs 1600x but it was a $10 difference so it’s negligible. From what I’ve seen the 1600x seems to consistently clock higher than the 1600 in regards to 4+ GHz overclock.

The best deal is all about the motherboard more than the 1600x. The ASUS X370-F Strix is probably one of the best bang for the buck in regards to the quality of parts used in construction and bios options. I like to play it safe when overclocking and just like PSU’s I like to spend a like extra to get a quality motherboard so I put it up there for an option for you.
