I mean I like a challenge, don't get me wrong, I'll turn up the difficulty if its too easy.

I remember playing Batman Arkham knight, and there was no difficulty settings. I got to the helicopter boss and it was brutal, just brutal. I tried like 50 times! Uninstalled and will never play another batman game again (from the same studios). Its 2017 game devs, if ya can't add difficulty settings, its a no buy for me.

I really thought I was the only one that was like this. I have been gaming for more than 20 years and still play on easy because I get destroyed by a lot of games and replaying levels because I died is frustrating and ruins the fun for me. As for what you said, most games do require a difficulty setting but most rpgs have no setting but it's scalable difficulty so a bad gamer like me can still make it through. Fallout and borderlands are good examples of this.

remember when games would only let you play 1/3 of the way through, on easy? You'd beat a level then it'd be like "Lul N00b, git gud and play norms!"

Or something to that effect...

Not everyone has the time to master games and put in hundreds of hours into them to play everything on brutal difficulties. Isn't the point of the game to be relaxing? I've always played on medium.
Some games are meant to be relaxing, other games not so much. There are a number of games that are meant to be played at your own pace.

For the more difficult games, having a difficulty slider is nice for those of us who just want to play the game to enjoy the story and action at a manageable level.

I don't have as much time as I'd like anymore to re-play the same level over and over for a stupid virtual achievement. redface.gif

This is really the heart of it all... everyone plays games for a different reason. If you're the type who needs to spend 400 hours in fallout, completing every achievement, then go for it, but there's also the person who just wants to sit down for a few hours of escapism and they shouldn't be left out just because the more "hard core" masses deem them "lesser gamers".

I've always thought it interesting to see the paradigm between people who refuse to play anything but the hardest difficulty, and those who just want to play.

It will depend for me. If there is an achievement or trophy that is unlocked by difficulty settings, I will do the most difficult first to get all the other achievements / trophies under it (ie, get reward for beating the game on easy, normal and hard). Usually unlocking the hardest achievement will unlock the others under it. If there is a case where a higher difficulty setting is unlocked after completing the game on any setting first, I will pick the easiest and blast through as quickly as possible to unlock the hardest setting (again, this will depend if there is an achievement for doing the hardest setting).

There was a time when I would do the hardest setting no matter what. I liked the challenge and if I got frustrated with something I would take it as a life lesson... take a break and come back to it refreshed and try again. Usually that worked for me. I won't lie though, there were a few moments where I just gave up and had to reduce difficulty settings or the way I was playing due to me being stuck at a particular spot for days on end (I'm looking at you Deus Ex: Human Revolution and your broken prepatched self).

Nowadays I pick my battles, some games I love the extra challenge, usually games like FPS or RPGs I will crank the difficulty. But for other games (RTS and 4x games), I like to work my way up the difficulty slider. For example Civilization games, always start out at chieftain and to this day still working on getting a win on the Diety difficulty... One of these days!!

Not only are many games NOT designed to be relaxing, many of the harder games out there (complex strategy or tactics games, not so much reflex based ones like SC2, also puzzle games) don’t require hundreds of hours to master. Many just require a certain amount of tactical thinking or logical problem solving skills.

For me, I do a lot of research on the game beforehand to determine what is probably the most balanced difficulty. But I shouldn't have to, games need to be better designed in this way and many others. See the difficulty descriptions of Neverwinter Nights 2, for example:

Tells me everything I need to know. Or better yet, difficulty customization options like Arma 3.

The difference between a real game and a lazy half-assed product.

Expanding on this, I never knew that SOMA actually tells you which difficulty mode the game was initially designed on. That is a nice benefit as well.

It all varies from game to game. I've played some games where easy, normal, hard and very hard were all done right. And I had to play through on normal just to be able to be good enough to play on hard, and then on hard to get to very hard. Then there have been other games where easy was = to other games' very hard. And still others where very hard was easy.
