Its funny tho, but the mining for the resources for all the batteries and other parts, are almost as bad or even worse on the environment.
Electric cars are great, and will get better with time, but just like you said, the sound, the smell, the visceral feeling of a V8 ,V10-V12 are somehow connected to our primal instinct. The engines feel "alive" is a sense that they breath, the suck in air and with fuel, explode, transform into energy and release roar and power. Same way we love old steam trains, they just feel alive when they fire up.
I tell everyone, get them while you can, we live in the second gold age of cars since the 50-60s, maybe even better then those years if you look at the power, safety and modern design. All things will pass, and the fact electric cars can surpass the performance of gasoline combustion engines is great, at least it wont feel like a downgrade in the first iterations, ( except range, time to recharge "re-fuel", maybe the lifespan of the battery, compared to modern engines) .
But until we can manage to replace coal burning powerplants, with something new (nuclear ,fusion, fission, whatever we can master to be cleaner) will not make electric cars the "environment saviors" just yet.
