Ryzen 1800x vs i7 6850k

Thread Starter
I'm kinda torn between these two CPUs. My sig rig is getting old, and it's having some random BSOD, I think the CPU is starting to degrade after 5 years of overclocked service. I'm not including the i7 8700k in this because I want an upgradable path. If I get an X99 motherboard I could upgrade to the 10 core i7 6950x later, when the price is reasonable. The Ryzen is basically maxed out at 4ghz, while the 6850k can clock to 4.4-4.5ghz but with 2 less cores and slightly better IPC. Would the multithread performance of these two CPUs be pretty close after overclocking? Any deal breakers on either CPUs that I need to be aware of? Thanks.

Ryzen 7 is an 8 core CPU. While the 6850K can OC around 300 MHz more it won't make up for the extra 2 cores the Ryzen 1800X has.
6850K has better single-threaded performance though and extra PCI-E lane, it also offers more future once the platform get older and 6950Xs get more reasonably priced.
If you can get them at the same price then I recommend X99 honestly.

The CPU itself is about $30 more ($320 for 1800x, $350 for 6850k). As for motherboards the X370 motherbords seems to be $100 cheaper (Asrock X370 Killer vs Asrock X99 Taichi for example). I'm still kind of worried about Ryzen's single thread performance, my current setup is not able to run some games smoothly in CEMU (I'm not sure if Ryzen 1800x @4ghz is that much faster than 2600k @4.6ghz in single thread performance), I would like to be able to run emulators (if RPCS3 continues to improve or if they can emulate the Switch in the future), I don't want to be forced to upgrade again due to the lower single thread performance of the Ryzen. This is why I'm still debating between the two options.

What is it for? Gaming; or production? If you want to go Ryzen i'd wait for 2 months. I heard Ryzen + is supposed to be coming out in Early Q1, and it is supposed to sport at least 10% faster frequencies.

Edit :-

BTW I just checked Amazon and 7800X is priced $310 while cheapest X299 boards cost around $220. If you care about cores so much you might as well go to X299 and forget X99 since they cost about the same.

This is going to be 90% gaming 10% others (gameplay video editing, video transcoding for archiving). If AMD doesn't have the history of delays, I would be more willing to wait. But I can see this getting delayed to 2H of 2018. AMD is not good at launching new processes, Ryzen+ is going to get delayed.

I have not considered that option, it seems like this might be a good way to go. $530 for mobo and CPU is not bad. But the downside is the 10 core 7950x will take longer to drop in price. I'm sure the IPC improvement between 6xxx and 7xxx series is minimal.

Yeah i get that you wouldn't want to wait for AMD either, you're right. If its for mostly gaming i'd go X99. AMD's gaming performance isn't there yet with the lower frequencies. Some games it holds its ground against intel, and other games like Destiny 2 Intel still takes them to the woodshed.
Also there was actually performance degradation in games with how they did the mesh, and cache structure on X299. It also has bird poo for paste rather than X99 having solder.

Thanks for the info. I ended up getting a i7 6800k ($234 brand new). I'm definitely not going SLI, so having less PCI-E lanes shouldn't be an issue for me. I also looked into the i7 7800x more, while it's only $310, the x299 mobo are much more expensive. I think I'll just get a cheap x99 mobo for the 6800k. I still have the upgrade path to the 6950x 10 core in the future.
