[Looking for suggestions!] AOC G2460PF or Samsung C24FG70 as a 144Hz all-rounder?

Hello overclockers! I just finished scrubbing the latest forum threads and after some search I've decided it's better if I ask this to you guys directly

I've been looking for an upgrade to my viewing experience, since i've been stuck with a display that has been serving me for perhaps the last 6 years (it has way outlasted the GTX 260 I bought together with it!). My current rig is in my signature, and I live in italy so I'm contextualizing price references in the euro area.

Many months ago I tried out a 144Hz 1080p display at a friend's house (an ASUS VG248QE for context) and while I didn't really dig the image rendition, I loved the fluidity a higher refresh rate can give. Since then, I've been gathering information about what monitors I could potentially buy, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of decently priced 144Hz low input lag monitors, considering I don't really want any extra frills, my ideal price point would be under 300€ (but if it's unreasonable I could extend my price range).

My current display is a 22 inch TV, the LG M227WD (Lord forgive me, I did not know what I was doing!), which I plan keeping as a second screen on my desk. I think 24'' would be a good size for a 1080p screen for me, and they appear to be the cheapest ones out there.

There's a few monitors that offer pretty much the same deal: the AOC G2460PF, the ASUS VG248QE, the BenQ ZOWIE G2460PF, and the Acer GN246HL seem all to have problems with color rendering or over sharpness. I am not sure if PCMonitors is a holy grail of information but they sure seem to do a very thorough testing. The other reviews I've found so far look pretty generic, with not a lot of methodical testing going on. Everyone puts the ASUS model on a pedestal while noticing the problems, but PCMonitors concludes the AOC is an overall better deal than the ASUS one.

All was going well, I was determined to go with the AOC monitor, which is the one whose price i've been, ahem, monitoring for the past weeks, but I didn't notice it wasn't the recommended 1080p 144Hz 24-ish inch screen on PCMonitors.
For that, this Samsung C24FG70 takes the crown, and currently I can find it online for just about the same price of the AOC G2460PF (260€, give or take some cents). It is a slightly curved 23.5'' VA monitor so I'm surprised to see it at this price range.

In conclusion, what's your opinion about this Samsung monitor? Do you have any experience with any of these monitors? I'd really like to wrap my head around this, what I look for isn't just a gaming monitor, but for a good performer all around, that I can use daily, to read, code, and game on. Thanks for reading so far! If you did, you're already my hero ^^

If you buy the C24FG70, expect to see overshoot in almost every transition. Some of it will be hardly noticeable; some will be pretty noticeable; a little will be horrendously purple. It also tends to have some black uniformity problems, mostly in the form of clouding. Other than that, it's a very pleasant monitor.

In relation to a $250-ish TN monitor, it might be a good purchase.

Actually, I can assure you it happens all the time. That was one of the reasons I returned mine.

I have had the c24fg70 since april. The colors are much better than the asus. The asus is the tried and true gaming only monitor. It's fast. Especially with lightboost. The samsang does have it problems. Mine recently starting flickering and the brightness is screwy. But for the last day it's been fine. It's so weird.

I was suppose to send it to samsung. If it acts up again. Out it goes!

Ps i own both the asus and samsung.

Thanks for the feedback so far, apparently the Samsung monitor I mentioned was a flash sale, it went out of stock very fast! It now costs 300€ from third party sellers, we'll see how that goes.
Even just by the reviews you can find online, do you think I would be disappointed by the AOC monitor if I ended up getting that one?

I have had the AOC G2460PF for half a year now, it is one of the nicest 1080p freesync monitors i have had. Gaming is awesome on it. 1ms and 144hz with freesync hard to beat at its price and its quality is top notch imo.

Edit: seen your using a GTX 970,I used a GTX 1060 on this for months and it was good just turn on fast sync in the nvidia control panel.

Why not get a gsync monitor? Let me guess...to much $$$

The AOC has a TN panel with freesync. It's probably has the same panel as the ASUS. To lazy to look it up.

. The ASUS, if you can find one is the best gaming monitor without adaptive sync but the colors are bad. All TN colors aren't the greatest. The AOC and Viewsonic don't have motion blur or lightboost hacks for the 1080p monitors. I'm sure the AOC would be fine. But understand the down sides to a tn panel. Here are some others but try at your own risk!

MSI Optix MAG24C. just came out. same as the samsung!!!
Pixio new px277 also just came out?
Nixeus EDG 27. Similar to the pixio.
asus mg248qr. The one with the r at the end!
Viewsonic XG2401.

Thank you for sharing your experience! It's pretty uplifting to hear

I would consider a G-Sync monitor but I rarely notice tearing in games so I don't think I absolutely need that in my life
tongue.gif

Also I looked up those monitors and only the MG248QR and the XG2401 are available to me... PCMonitors recommends the Viewsonic one so I might consider it. Thank you for the suggestions! This though just expands the list of potential monitors to consider, halp! XD

The ASUS MG248QR. The model with the R at the end has ELMB. Which I bet puts the monitor into it's lightboost strobing mode. Only works up to 120hz like the VG248QE.

Most 1080P TN monitors also have scanlines! PCMonitors talks about it in the Viewsonic XG2401 review. My ASUS gets them. Especially with lightboost...So watch out! The samsung has a blurry text problem. I've gotten used to it. Always something! At least you have tons of choices!

theres a samsung thread here that covers all the pros and cons of the c24fg70 - but im just gonna throw this out here
If youre using it as an overall monitor, expect fairly bad text rendering because of its pixel layout.

Although, some dont notice that, might have to buy it to test that for yourself since you can always return it

Sadly I'm forced to buy online because of availability :I
Are you saying the text rendering would be worse than my current monitor's? Here is a reference pic: https://imgur.com/a/XGxLS

I never thought displays in 2017 would have troubles rendering characters... o_O
From the PCMonitors review, text doesn't seem to be that bad... I'm confused once again :'D

I can't find the samsung thread you mentioned, maybe I'm not looking at the right place, could you please link it if you have it at hand?

Perhaps this could be relevant. It's a cheap little monitor that's better than average.

I watched the review, seems an alright monitor, I can find it for about 311€ and I don't understand if it's better or worse than the ViewSonic XG2401 (I don't really know what kd5151 meant by TN scanlines sorry >_>)

heres the thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1605507/samsung-monitors-of-2016-introduced-curved-high-resolution-gaming-flat-and-business-monitor-help-me-understand-125-srgb-and-quantum-dot

But as i said, its not an issue for everyone, but for some its a deal breaker

Sorry, I took some time to reflect about my needs and expectations about high frequency "gaming" monitors... I've peeked at that Samsung thread, it seems like the overshooting and slightly blurry text is there "by design" so to speak. I understand it might not be a problem for everyone but I'd like to have a monitor that I can expect to like in the first place XD

Reading online about the ViewSonic it seems like they have generally better calibrated monitors but, some reviews still complain a bit about its performance, so idk. Seems like with a bit of luck it would be my best pick, it costs even slightly less than the Samsung monitor so why not.

In this time I've been thinking, since I don't have the urgent need to buy a monitor (as I mentioned my good old 60Hz DVI powered TV works fine), so I might consider just wait until there is some high refresh rate monitor (144, or even 240Hz) that has little to no drawbacks, for a reasonable price. I have never had the chance to look at a gsync monitor but i've heard, even those who don't notice screen tearing can notice a much better viewing experience with dynamic refresh rate.

Sorry for having transcended my original question, I never expected to be this much "market fragmentation" on cheap 144Hz monitors! So my actual question is, would you recommend the ViewSonic XG2401 to a person who not only games but wants crisp text, clear images, with acceptable color accuracy and great performance/low latency?

P.S.: thanks to everyone so far for contributing to the discussion, you've helped me learn quite a bit so far!
