[Guru3d] Ryzen 3 1200 CPU with Eight Active CPU Cores Enabled

Thread Starter
It is not the first time we see hear about something like this happening. But thus far we haven't seen it happening with a Ryzen 3 1200. There is a video floating on the web of a Russia based guy who purchased a Ryzen 3 1200, a four core sub 100 USD processor. The user, however, found his PC rather fast.

As it turns out, instead of four active CPU cores, he has eight CPU cores active. SMT towards 16 threads, however, was not active. The extra cores were not unlocked by a trick or tweak in the BIOS, it ran fully activated "out of the box".

The buyer made a video on Youtube which supports his claims with proof. CPU-Z displays eight cores and threads instead of four. The benchmark gives the Ryzen 3 1200 a significantly higher performance than it would have had with four cores. In the Cinebench R15, the user reached around 900 opposed to the normally roughly 480 points in the multithreading test.

It wasn't a BIOS unlock, just a chip with 8 cores working. That means it is posible to unlock cores.

Silicon lottery on a whole new level.

It would be a mistake to make that claim without knowing the method by which cores are disabled. If they're disabled via laser or blown fuses, they're disabled forever. A QC mistake that didn't disable the cores for a batch would mean you simply had a batch of processors with more cores left on than expected, not that it'd be possible to enable them through soft means.

Have any idea how these places check chips? is it more an autonomy thing or do people physically check them in like a assembly like kind of test bench?

AMD's yields must be through the roof if they are able to do this, last known yields were around 85%.

I feel like faking something like this wouldn't be terribly hard to do.

Yet another way Intel beats AMD: Intel actually knows how to disable their chips. rolleyes.gif

(Yes, I'm being facetious. Random 8-core Ryzens are hilarious.)

Someone needs to regulate the purchase of AMD CPU's as gambling.
