They died in Canada because they brought nothing new to the table, and didn't bring what Canadians were expecting of them (how they have decent prices in the US for starters)... Oh, and their insanely rapid rollout of stores with no logistics in place, leaving their store shelves barren most of the time.

Well, those are all American companies and it's not as easy to come into the Canadian market and expect high adoption rates.

I remember the Zellers in my town was around since I moved there in 2000. In 2013-2014 when Target announced they'd come across the border, they converted the existing Zellers into Target.

Six months or so later, Target closed. So everyone who had a job at Zellers all those years basically got laid off.

Ironically, now it's a Canadian Tire.

GameStop bought EbGames some years ago but as far as I know ( I haven't been in Canada for a couple years ) EbGames is still around.

Sears and all those big box stores are bound to die. Same with Best Buy. Look at Future Shop. Dead.

I don't think K-Mart was ever in Canada but I'm sure it'd would die too.

Everything dies in Canada! Lol

EB Games is still open, and as for Futureshop they're closed because one random day Best Buy decided to shut them all down. Some were re-opened as a Best Buy location a few days to a few months later while others were closed permanently.

Because FS and BB are one in the same... And one day they decided that having FS in Canada without BB was not working for them so opened their own competing stores to themselves.

This made little sense to me. Their websites, prices and even fliers were near identical. Same sales at the same time and the exact same products were carried by both.

I was scratching my head when this was happening and then in my town, in a brand new business part that had been developed in an area that had nothing but trees and rocks, they had built a FS in the corner of this new business park. Then a couple years later is when the BB move happened and where did they build the BB in my area? Right across the parking lot from FS...

If they just wanted to have a single brand and single store, why didn't they just change the FS to a BB? Why build a second store next to your existing one with a diff name, have them compete with the same products, prices and sales for a few years before realizing the redundancy of it all?

I'm guessing it's because they were trying to maintain the illusion that Futureshop was still solely a Canadian company, as opposed to one that was bought out by Best Buy ages ago. Additionally, they were trying to keep customers who were loyal to Futureshop happy, as well as provide somewhere to ship for those who refused to shop at Futureshop.

Why they would go fourteen years doing this is uncertain, perhaps the executives thought that they wanted to build the Canadian presence and brand trust of Best Buy or something...

Received an email from Newegg today, they're now charging me state tax. Deals may not be such a deal now.
One of the reasons I bought from NCIX in 2007 and 2008 was because they wouldn't charge Ontario sales tax. That and they actually had good prices back then. When they set up shop in Ontario, I still bought from them but there was no reason to prefer them to newegg or canada computers. They should have built up their online presence instead of building large box stores. It's not even a 20/20 hindsight kind of thing, I never understood why they were opening all these stores all over the place when most people order parts online. All people wanted were pick up locations.

could care less aboot ncix going kaput.... being in states, ncix fell hard like compussr did back in 2007 ( who I worked for ), thy fell like compusa did

so what if newegg charge you tax... makes no difference to me in california and I wont diss them because thy charge me a tax... I either get my gear from newegg or amazon... I no longer get any hardware from irep since I left office depot back in feb 07 to work for a place that has health insure 401k etc for full timers...

opening an absurd amount of stores like thy did was their undoing... just bad business
