as you all know logitech doesn't support the old MX510 with windows 10, you can only use the 400dpi mode without a driver, but i found a way for enabling the 800 dpi mode on windows 10 64 bit:
maybe a better weekend for some of us that want the "old days" feelings back and upgrades only the mouseskates:

1) unsintall all setpoint drivers
2) download the 4.24BR 64 bit driver package (http://support.logitech.com/de_de/software/setpoint, select windows vista from dropdown menu)
3) "try" to install the driver in "vista compatibility mode", it starts but after some seconds (minutes?) it gives you the message "there is some problem ..." (or silimar message in your language)
4) try your MX510

but this enables the 800 dpi mode on the MX510 in windows 10

after every reboot you get now the same message about the "problem" but it works, windows tries to load the driver, it fails but this enables the 800 dpi mode, it works after coldboot

if you want to remove this and the 800dpi mode:
install the newest 6.67 setpoint driver,
but your lovely MX510 fails back to 400 dpi mode

yes, i meant 4.24BT version (setpoint424bt_x64.exe), the next later version (4.80) doesn't set the dpi to 800

sorry again, my mistake, i have all the versions downloaded, reinstalled them multiple times and the only version working is :
setpoint400br_x64, driver version in windows is 4.0.101.0, datetime: 11.04.2007 installed in vista compatibility mode

i have installed/uninstalled 4.00 / 4.24 / 4.40 / 4.60 / 4.80 versions and after the latest installation of 4.00BR in vista compatibility mode, the logitech setpoint gui is now working, it was not working after first installations, i think that one of the 4.24 - 4.60 versions left some files that were not available for the first installation of 4.00BR, now i didn't get any "problem" message after installation and can use the setpoint gui

i have "double checked" the behavior of the mouse, of course the settings in setpoint gui and windows are 6/11, no acceleration at all:
moving verly slowly from left to right on the desktop gives me the same amount of centimeters on the mousepad like another hw-set-800dpi mouse do (speedlink fireglider)
(the slow movement should disable the acceleration if possibly set by the driver, normally the setpoint ui shows 3/11 with low/mid acceleration set directly after installation)

Is this your experience for other mice of same generation (like razers copperhead/dimondback etc.) too? So they all are maybe not capable for hardware supported 800 dpi modes?

Forgotten to say:
Today i got my Ninonx Venator, i'm using it in 400dpi mode and funny to say but the Venator "feels" like the old Diamondback. But maybe them all are not really different for a human and most of the feeling is only placebo ("new sensor", "shape", "grip" ), i don't really know.

If this was for the mx500 rather than 510 i think some people might actually using it. (as this would then also work for the mx300, which is just unusable on desctop with nowadays resolutions, despite it being 1 of the 2 best mice ever created)

The Logitech G1 (same "average" sensor as 510) didn't need any driver to run at 800 dpi.

There is no Spoon ... there is no Hack at the year 2021 ... Logitech hide their MX510 64bit driver within their
SetPoint software
