So don't laugh, but my Samsung S4 that I've had for ages is starting to croak... have been using Tmobile's prepaid unl. data / 100m calls plan since my first smart phone. Now I'm looking for something new to use that'll hold up decently and plays well with Tmobile's network.
Would like to be able to take good videos/pictures, have an okay front facing camera, have expandable SD storage and a good display. I'm really nothing close to being a power user, so take that into consideration
Just grab an unlocked Nexus 5X for $170 or Nexus 6P for $199 on Amazon. I bought the 5X when it released and upgraded to the 6P about a year ago, both extremely good phones.

Need is entirely subjective but why wouldn't you want expandable memory, given the option? Easy backup, additional non-cloud storage, save videos/pictures to it allowing the internal storage to be reserved for apps, on-device music for the rare situations you don't have service, and all of it easily transferable to another device?
I'd take a 32GB with the ability to use 128gb microSDs over a twice-as-expensive 64GB w/ no expandable memory..
Haha - okay ya sorta got me there. But even the most basic of usage still benefits from expandable memory (picture storage, on-device music/videos). And I still stand by my statement about not being a power user as I don't do nearly as much with my phone as 90% of the people within my age group (hell, I don't even social media: no FB, Snap, IG).
All I'm saying is that given the option, I'm going to opt for the phone with expandable memory just because it's a feature that doesn't really change the cost drastically. Unlike going from a 32gb model of a phone to a 64gb model. It's kind of like paying $300 for a 1TB SSD, saying that's all you're ever spending on storage, then breaking all your other SATA ports because you're confident in that fact.... vs paying $80 for a 250GB SSD and $75 for a 3TB HDD and still being able to add/swap other HDDs later. Plenty of practical uses for cheaper, slower on-device storage.
Welp now I'm torn between preordering an Honor 7x, getting a standard 32gb Moto g5 plus, or going a bit over budget and getting the 64gb storage / 4gb ram version of the g5 plus.

Lol I absolutely detest ads, and I'd rather just get the g5+ 64GB for $240 shipped (once it comes back into stock)... rather than paying $200 upfront, dealing with ads, then getting annoyed and having to pay $50 later when I decide to do away with it.

Around black friday it was on sale on newegg and come with moto bluetooth headphone. I think it was like 210 or 220 for 64GB. The 32GB is 170 as I brought one

Hrmmm - well the 64gb without the ads is $240, but if I'm willing to do open box (looks brand new), I can go down to $215-$220... trust that a lot more than refurb. You still think it's a better deal than getting a Honor 7x?
