I've read the manual (for the X399 Zenith Extreme) but still unclear when specifically you might need to use the 'Retry' switch vs simply the Safe Boot.
I know they're both useful when overclocking.
Can anyone provide an example of when you might use one vs the other?
I'm reading the manual right now, and I think I understand it.
Use the ReTry button when the motherboard fails to perform the POST but you're sure you could get it to POST if you could just force the motherboard to try again without making any changes. As the manual says, "When pressed, it forces the system to reboot while retaining the same settings to be retried in quick succession to achieve a successful POST."
The Safe Boot button is for getting back into the BIOS when the motherboard simply will not perform the POST no matter how many times you use the ReTry button. The Safe Boot button is a guaranteed way to get into the BIOS because it temporarily boots the motherboard up with safe settings so that you can go back into the BIOS to change your overclocking settings for the purpose of hopefully choosing settings that work better. As the manual says, "This button temporarily applies safe settings to the BIOS while retaining any overclocked settings allowing you to modify the settings causing boot failure." (they mean a failure to POST, which would prevent you from being able to get into the BIOS)
