New build for 8700k, what are your thoughts?

I am looking in this direction -

Case: Define S window
cpu: 8700K delid
gpu: evga sc acx 3.0 gtx 1080
mobo: asrock z370 fatality k6
psu: seasonic prime ultra 750w gold
Blocks: ek nickel acetal, stock evga backplate
Rads: front hwlabs 360 gts, top hwlabs 360 gts
Coolant: mayhems clear x1
Fans: noctua nf-f12 pwm chromax, stock fractal gp140
ek fittings, reservoir/pump, mayhems ultra clear 13/10 tubing
misc: pvc mesh top dust cover, bitfenix sleeved cables, nzxt hue

The goal is a silent build, fans @ 1000rpm or less during normal load operation. The cpu will be overclocked but nothing extreme. Am I on the right track with the rads / fans? I have read over the xtremerigs rad article more than once. From my overall research it seems that maybe only a good single 360 rad would be needed. But I figured why not use the rad space that is available. The Define S case is a water cooled builders friend, hence one of the reasons I chose it. Plus I like the looks. My current rig is in a Define C.

*EDIT: final build specs added

You must be looking to delid that 8700k correct? Intel's stock bird crap tim is a proper joke.

Looks like you have done your homework. You may want to have a look at the be quiet! Silent Wings 3 fans. I have run both them and the eLoops, and the SW3 is a bit smoother sounding - not necessarily quieter, but a less invasive sound profile.

I would also say to stick with Mayhems fluids rather than the EK fluid.

I think the upgrade to using bird crap was only done on Devils Canyon chips. Pretty sure they went back to using something with worse characteristics than bird crap after that. Intel's TIM is just.....so.....bad. How do you make a CPU that runs as hot as on 8700K, and not solder or at least use proper TIM on it?

Not planning on delidding this chip. I'm not after super stellar oc numbers.

EDIT: chip delid by silicon lottery

That is true

Update:

I finally ordered the pc hardware and some of the cooling parts. Mrs. Claus got me an oculus rift. Wasn't expecting that. So i added a 1080 to the list of parts. Damn this **** just keeps adding up.

Congratulations on the Oculus! Maybe you need some company for that 1080...?

Definitely on the list. I bought an evga SC unit. Right now I'm still hung up on which radiators to use.

After some consideration, I will be sending this chip to silicon lottery. I don't have the cojones to do it myself.

Hi,
You'll get a 1 year warranty out of SL hard to give that to yourself

I give myself a lifetime warranty when I do it. Should anything go wrong, I simply find a reason to void the warranty by citing improper use. Learned that from a certain sailboat company......

Yeah I knew about it. But unfortunately by the time I went to buy one they were oos everywhere. Only paid $530 for the evga model and it has a reference pcb. Plus got a free game.

Hi,
Sounds like another Limited lifetime to me

Hi,
You might use rig builder and add all your goodies to it
Fans well that is something of personal preference
I lean to high rpm ML140's are okay so far as I can tell fan noise really doesn't bother me
Music/.... is usually a lot louder

So I am thinking of using a hwlabs gts 360 in the front instead of a sr2. I plan on placing the reservoir behind the radiator (typical). I think the sr2 might eat up too much space. And after some reading, it seems the NB eloop fans shouldnt have anything in front of them. I am leaning towards some venturi hp-12 fans for the front rad at least; probably both rads.

Realistically, the GTS and SR2 will have no noticeable performance difference until you get into higher fan speeds - the type with annoying noise. So, if you are building an everyday rig that you are in the same room with and intend on keeping fan noise to tolerable levels, IMO the GTS is typically a better bet since it gives you a bit more working room in the case. Even at higher fan speeds the GTS to SR2 difference is not drastic unless you are running P/P....and that opens up a whole new level of noise.

I have since decided to send the chip to silicon lottery when i get it. If I can pull off 5ghz Ill be happy. I game on a 1080p tv. Dont think Ill need a 1080 ti anytime soon.

Hi,
Yep prices still to high for 1080ti's
Wait for the next release unless you run across a nicely priced open box some where
Just get the in store warranty in case something is really wrong with it

Open boxes seem to come up just after a new release too on older models

There's a boat load of cheap 980ti's out there

Today I received both the radiators and the fans. I also visited the post office and sent the 8700k to Silicon Lottery for bird **** removal. Still have some more parts to order. If I can pick up some distilled water tomorrow, I will flush the rads this weekend. Planning on doing near boiling tap water flushes and room temp distilled rinse.

Do a few distilled shake renses, I don't see the need for hot water. Might be worst as you could burn yourself or evaporating hot tap water could leave calcium buil up.

I feel as if I made a mistake buying (1) 240 and (1) 360 as supposed to (2) 360 radiators. Should I return the 240 in favor of another 360 GTS?

I have also decided to switch to soft tubing. Going to use Mayhems ultra clear 13/10 mm.

I bought 2x 360 GTS, it is an awesome rad, the case advertised it could fit 2x360 rads, though it really couldn't w/o sacrificing aesthetic reasons for buying the case. So replace case or rad, I got a 240mm and I gave the other 360mm GTS to my old man who is doing an identical build. My system was the guinea pig.

The rule of thumb is 1x120 for each device or 2x120 for each device that is being OC'ed. With a with a 5x120 or 6x120 you still have enough, the more rads really means the slower you can run your fans and be more quite. There is always going to be a point of diminishing returns. You don't "need it" cooling wise.

I think this will be the question only you can answer:
1) Can you fit both 2x360 GTS?
2) Do you want to hold of on the build to wait for it?
3) Do you want something slightly quiter?
4) Do you want to spend the money for shipping it back and more for the 2nd 360 GTS?

Using a xcel spreadsheet calculator I found online, I estimate only needing 2.5 120mm radiator spaces at ~300 watts.
1 - yes
2 - time is not an issue. being new to this and my compulsive indecisiveness slows things down anyway
3 - planning on 1000 rpm max build as it is
4 - $10 loss overall including the return shipping plus the offset cost of another fan and new radiator (~$35)
