New build

I would like some suggestions for parts for a new build.

Uses: Mostly for web browsing and YouTube, video and movie watching, music playing, word processing and some gaming (mostly Microsoft Flight Simulator), but might crank up the gaming (maybe). I have no plans to overclock.

Budget: $1500 USD (without monitor or other accessories), but if you can get it lower that would be great! (Just to let you know I tend to overspend by a lot so hopefully you can give me an ideal price range for the uses above so I don't spend too much)

I want the best parts with reputable brands that would suit my needs and uses best. I'll be going for either a Micro ATX or Mini ITX motherboard as I don't have plans to go back to a full ATX board due to size and weight.

I hope you can help me with the following:

-Processor
-Motherboard (Either micro-ATX or mini-itx)
-Graphics card (To match the motherboard)
-Memory
-Power supply (Fully modular) (Should I go for a fanless PSU? I want to avoid dealing with horribly annoying sound. I have been dealing with that sound for years on the Corsair HX 650)
-CPU cooler and thermal paste
-LED case fans
-SSD
-SATA, and custom fully sleeved cables CableMod or elsewhere? (Should I get combs for the sleeved cables as well?)
-Surge protector or UPS

As for the case, I'll be going for either the Corsair Carbide Air 240 or BitFenix Prodigy, but open to other suggestions as well. I would like a case that would allow for easy access to 3.5-inch drives and can hold at least 2 so if you can recommend another case with a similar or much better look like the ones above, feel free to make a suggestion!

Does anyone know where I can get pre sleeved cases and fans, etc.? If I purchase from Cablemod, should I go for Nylon or Paracord? And can anyone guide me on which cables to get as well as the lengths?

Has anyone purchased from frozencpu.com or performance-pcs.com before? Curious to know how they are.

Should I add sound dampening material to the case?

And lastly, should I get a full or OEM version of the OS?

Thanks!

1.) Probably CS or some shooter that catches my interest (once again, maybe is the keyword)

2.) Once again, the monitor is excluded from the budget, but still debating on what to get between a 23-24". I currently have a Samsung SyncMaster S23B550 which means I definitely have to upgrade.

I suggest the 8600k if you plan on overclocking a little. if not, the 8400.

The 8600k is still very good option, 6 cores and 6 threads (you wont be running VM's or anything crazy) so it meets your needs and will definitely last you a while

Depends on what games you play? a 1060 is still pretty darn good...if you can get your hands on one...or a 1070. SKip the Ti variant and go 1080 if you are playing games at medium settings 4k or 1440p ultra. maybe 1080 Ti if you want 4k maximum gaming. but there goes your budget! No shame in getting a used gtx 1080. I snagged one for 400 bucks and absolutely crush games at 1440p!! Check reddit.com/r/hardwareswap as well as the OCN marketplace.

16gb of ram is a must...but also super over priced right now. they go for just over 200 bucks for a 16gb kit. Nov 16 when I built my box, it was 115.

Honestly, on sleeving your cables, for PSU, go with cablemod. The rest of them like fans can be done on your own. save the money. Nylon is more rigid, paracord is more flexible, but picks up dust and stuff quickly.

might i suggest an EVGA Z370 micro? It has dual bios as well as 8 cpu power phases...and is just under 200 bucks. Solid all black build. They make good stuff. SHould match any gpu nicely

If you hold off though, intel 400 series boards should be out soon, like summer time, and perhaps more CPU or a ++ revision? we shall see. but hold off unless you are running like an AMD 8 core system, or an old dual core intel setup.

the fans, cpu cooler, thermal paste, etc is all preference.

here is my list. brings you to 1260, but shop around!

If you want amd, a 1600/1600x is where its at. Will drop costs a little, but not much. Its on par for multicore performance but stock speeda suck.it wont clock higher than 4.1 without mega power and heat. If you intend on just turning on the PC for general use and playing some games, it would be ok. The Ryzen 2 or Ryzen+ and 400 series boards will also be out soon....in April i think.

You can wait until then for more features on the boards as well as a refresh/enhanced ryzen cpu. If its NOT a great upgrade over current stuff, it will at least push current gen stuff down in price some more.

What do you use as of now? Never stated that.

Here's what I have now:

-Corsair Graphite 600T
-Intel Core i7-4770K
-ASUS Z87-PRO motherboard
-ASUS NVIDIA GTX780 graphics card
-Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler
-16 GB memory Corsair Dominator (2 sticks of 8GB)
-Corsair Professional Series HX650W 80-Gold Power Supply
-Crucial M500 480GB SSD
-Windows 10 Home
-Samsung S23B550V monitor

Seems overkill huh. Had it since 2013, never overclocked. Aside from CS, never gamed on it.

For your use, i would recommend upgrading the GPU. There isny anything really wrong with the rest of your system. it would live happily for a while. If you do end up going Ryzen or whatever, what do you have planned for that CPU/RAM/MOBO?

If I was in your boat, I would just get a newer GPU, perhaps a 1060 or even a 1050 Ti maybe a monitor.

And DELID THAT HASWELL!!! hit up Whooleo on here, he is in NJ and might be able to help you out with his kit and his knowledge.

I plan to change everything. Unfortunately, the fans and board are acting up so I might as well start from scratch.

So what do you WANT to spend? I remember your budget of 1500, but that is what you CAN spend.

But seriously, what you doing with that 4770k and ram!?!?!

Well, I spent about $2,200 for my current build and I'm sure that's overkill.

This time around, I want to spend much less. $1,500 or less.

And currently, I just use it for browsing, videos, documents, music. Nothing too intensive.

an i5 8400 would be up your alley. You dont overclock and do intensive stuff like rendering, stream while gaming, etc. A 1600 is good for multi threaded workloads, rendering videos, streaming while gaming, etc. I cant justify going that route (Ryzen) unless its purely from a cost perspective and you get max PCIe lanes from the get go.

Either route you decide on going, Micro Center has some sweet deals for the mobo/cpu combo! well, not on all processors like it is at my MC.

an 8400 is 219. the 8600k is 249. Great motherboards for both are about 160-190.

Ryzen+ or whatever everyone wants to call it should be out in March. Along with 400 boards.

Any news on the Intel front? DOnt think so...as they like to scramble to throw senseless items on the market.

There should be 400 series boards from them as well as "new" cpu's sometime near who knows.

The other cool thing is, Intel's take on the APU market that comes with Vega iGPU's is that it out paces a 1050 or Ti. Which is superb! No need for a GPU, saving even more money to put towards that faster ram, like DDR4 4000.

I thinknthe PSU i recoomended has the hybrid mode. If it doesnt reach a certain temp the fan doesnt kick on. Super quiet, i have an AX platinum model.

#20 ·
The hybrid fan mode on the EVGA SuperNova G3 is much to aggressive which means the fan RPM´s goes from low to very high without any warning which makes the G3 about the least quiet PSU with a hybrid fan mode
Its not bad it just has a piss poor hybrid fan mode which means anyone looking for a quiet hybrid fan mode will hate the G3

The rest of the 300-series chipsets (Z390, H370, B360, H310) will release eventually. If you don't plan on overclocking, it's worth waiting for a H370 motherboard. They should be priced quite a bit lower than Z370 motherboards. Depending on your needs, a H310 motherboard could be satisfactory.

There's no rumors of 400-series motherboards releasing anytime soon, at least not for Intel. AMD will be releasing 400-series chipsets in conjunction with their Ryzen refresh in a few months.

Do you have a time frame on the release date for the new Intel boards?

Q1 is all I know. I would expect them to release in the next month or so.

Thank you.

So I'm all set with the 8400. The board, I can wait for till March since that's when I have the time to.

Moving on, I hope to get some input again.

Most modern PSU´s have a hybrid fan mode option where the fan is off at low loads and temps and only starts up at higher loads and temps
Both the Seasonic Foucs Plus and the Seasonic Prime Ultra has a hybrid fan mode, the EVGA SuperNova G3 has one as well but you dont want a G3

As for aftermarket cables they are a massive pain in the butt so unless you really want to spend hours to get them to look alright dont bother
And last you could not have picked a worse time to build a new system because almost all GPU´s are out of stock everywhere and the few that are left have skyrocketed in price

Its all those dammed miners that are buying up all the GPU´s
