Hey fellow geek pimpoholics! I came around here several mnoths ago asking about building the latest and greatest, My finances have changed. Here is what I am seeking. This is a box to house several VMs not running concurrently so I can play with server 16 services, Ubuntu services, and a sandbox of win10 to do Dev work on. The only game I play is OverWatch.
Here is what I think I want:
Ryzen 1800x
MoBo of your recommendation that supports the following:
-1 stick if 1T m.2 SSD (Windows kernels for all VMs will be on this stick only )
-overclockable but nothing crazy as stability is the main concern.
-ability to run the fastest ram at with 64g capability but 32g is sufficient
-Dual lane USB-C to run 2 4k monitors on
Proper ram for recommended mobo
Proper cooling for the CPU (not interested in cooling anything but CPU.
The only game I play is overwatch so a video card that is sufficient for that
Several SATA HDDS to run in a raid 5 or 1+0 config for speed and redundancy
--I am open to suggestions for the fastest and most reliable HDDs with price considered
A decent small form factor tower to cool it. I am not into RGB at all
A proper Power supply
Thanks bros!
I saw the new 1900x for a few buck more that just came out out but the mobo is a few hundred more. I would love to go with a 1050x but its not in the budget now.
If anyone is selling a machine like this in order to upgrade to something better hit me up.
Hahah not from what I've seen, but I'll take your word for it
Looks like it will be a nice build by the way. Specially as sff. Would you consider going regular atx or eatx and then having a few gpus so you could dedicate more resources to the vms?
It’s all about confidence bro. Walk around like you got a 10” stick of Ram even though you only got a 5” stick. When the time comes, it don’t matter how much ram you have just as long as it works and the buffer doesn’t overflow too suddenly.
I think 1 decent GPU will cut it. Dedicating 1g of vram works fine on my laptop running several VMs concurrently. Like I said.... I only play Overwatch a few times a day. This is a dev / lab box.

Hmmm.... unregistered educational provider? I walked around with 4G of Ram until 64b archirecture came about. Now I have 4 kids and a wife! Not registered but know what I’m taking about.
Ok guys. How bout some help here? I need a mobo.... Taichi still the one to have? I'm gonna need a 6bay tower so small form factor may not but it if I decide to do raid 1+0. What ram is running at 3200 with 64g on the taichi?
What decent prices fast HDDs should I go with. If I run raid 1+0 I don't need to worry about it being the most reliable drive. I think I wanna go with a 15000rmp.
Who has the best deals nowadays? I have a microcenter 90min away. Is that still the spot?
Microcenter is still the spot. I have been keeping an eye on their open box specials for about six months now, and have scored excellent ram, power supplies, asus crosshairs 6 hero (recommended Ryzen board - $220 msrp discounted to $190 open box in mint condition, plus $30 bundle saving savings) deals. Currently my location has a surplus of opened box motherboards, between low end and high end, intel and amd, of all manufacturers. Personally I am keeping en eye out for sabertooth 990fx boards an employee claimed intermittently arrive in inventory (we will see...)
The latter will probably serve you better for what you have listed, at least if you're searching for new hard disk drives for an array.
And depending on your local community, Craigslist computer parts by owner may serve you well for finding good unopened or used equipment. DFW metroplex craigslist is swamped with morons and creeps, who would typically be better off paying to dispose of the crap they are trying to sell. But there are always gems if you practice vigilance and are able to act swiftly.
Taichi and Crosshair models are the ones to get for X370 chipsets.
Currently using the Taichi and loving it, its pared with G.SKILL TridentZ Series 16GB 3200 (PC4 25600)
Thanks guys. Here is what I ordered from Amazon. Microcenter was only a couple hundred cheaper, they didn't have all the ram, I would have to pay tax, and it's a 3 hour drive:
1800z Ryzen
Crosshairs hair V1 wifi
G skill ripjawz trident 3200 2x 16g
Crosshair TX series TM850
Samsung 850 m.2
$1600 next day
Ok. What cooler do I need? I am not O/C crazy. I was stability. Is my power supply sufficient?
I need 6 magnetic HDDs. What do you recommmend?
I want to play Overwatch on a 4K monitor maybe 6 hours a week. What video card is sufficient?
Sheesh microcenter has a ASUS GeForce Strix GTX 1070 Overclocked 8GB GDDR5 PCIe Video Card w/ Aura RGB Lighting for 380. PayPal has them for $1000. Lol. I may make the drive. I can’t get squat on eBay for 380.
No I’m just speaking geek. I speak binary and English. Does it come off like I am a foreigner? Bought the rest of the build today. Will post specs later when I lay it out. Haven’t built a box in 20’years. I’ll probably need your guys help.
Best vid card I going find was a 1050TI for $100 something. My 1050 on my laptop plays Overwatch on high with no problem. Once bitcoin tanks video cards will come down to proper prices. And believe me! Botcoin will tank.
I'm not a gamer so the 1050ti will run Overwatch just fine. As you can see by the pic, I play real FPS. I got that case because I can put 6 HDDs in there for Raid1+0. I'm just gonna run raid 5 for now with the 3. Plan is to have all Kernels and Virtual Memory on the m.2. Win10 will be the Host OS for VMWare Workstation Pro 14. I will be running a couple Linux Guest OS, Win Server16, and a couple more Windows OSes. I am a developer so I need to make sure my **** runs on older versions of Windows too. Does anyone have a tutorial where to start putting this together? I want to do it right the first time. I know there's no such thing but I want the best chance. Lol thanks for all you help guys and I apologize about the inappropriate material. I had a few glasses of vino in me. I thought the analogies were pretty damn funny though.
For the first build in 20 years, this is the first time the virgin build booted with no errors on the first press of the start button!. I got my 1tb m.2 running host Win10(256G) and paritioined 750GB for guest VMs. Ill share non-service files on the Raid setup. I have server 16, Ubuntu, 2 Win 10 instances, and a Win7 VM on the m2 and all are working fine. I couldn't figure out Crosshair Raid 5 yet, so I am using my host OS to stripe my 3 4TB blue SATAs with Dynamics DIsks in Winblows.. I am not happy with its performance. I need to figure out Raid 5 in the bios settings. Windows has Raid5 greyed our exclusive to Server16.
The computer runs slow as ****. My laptop boots 3X faster. I haven't played with the OC yet. I bought 3200 Ram and 2300 is being detected and thats what I am dealing with. In the new bois, I set Ram speed to PC3200 and it wont boot. Obviously they havent figured out the proper settings yet either.
I logged on to find some settings for people with liquid cooled PC3200 and 1800X settings on a Corsshair VI. Is my best bet just to look at people signatures, or is someone kind enough to help a brother out? I was able to use the F11 tuning wizard and I was runing 3900mhzm but the ram was still PC2300. I want to enter proper settings and avoid wizards at all costs.
I upgraded to the latest BIOS btw. I was stupid and didn't research if that was a good or bad idea. I just upgraded because I was feeling lazy.
Anyone care to share a link to O/C a 1800x with PC3200 Ram? Id appreciate it.
BTW Crosshair doesnt call virtualztion at AMD-V. You got to advanced/cpu setup/ SMP to enable virtualiztion.... thats pretty silly
Having some trouble with Raid drivers for Windows 10. I have 3 4TB wanting to stripe. There are 2 raid drivers in device manager and I am unable to locate what it wants. I have all the latest Crosshair drivers.
I got it all lined up. I just use presets 3333 fast Stiltz RAM and 4.0 presets which work fine for the 1800X and pc3200 14's. The onboard RAID will not work so I just made a Striped Volume in Windows. I plan to get 1 more HDD and Stripe and Mirror in Windows The next time I go out. No problems so far. She hits about 60 degrees C using cinebench.
I regret my inability to contribute to the troubleshooting discussion of RAID setups. My systems exist solely for CPU overclocking, and therefore data integrity of my hard disks is wholly and entirely worthless. If they crash, wipe them and start fresh.
I do have 2x 500GB and 2x 1TB laptop harddisk drives I could practice configuring RAID, but it would be merely that: practice.
