Official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Thread (Discussion & Modification) - Page 22

I hate to break it to you guys but this game is bombing hard. I tried to warn you guys with my Stalker BETA thread, and people flamed me lol.

Honestly this game has the following serious issues:

PDA sucks. It's very hard to get to work and ends up taking way too much time.

Inventory screen is live during play. For some reason, enemy AI knows when you're in your inventory screen and they pick that time to attack. You only have one gun slot other than your pistol so you're in your inventory a lot.

Enemies have adamantium skin, only their head is exposed. For some reason, it takes two shots to kill someone with a head shot. I guess the first bullet merely gives them a concussion?

The graphics API is horribly implemented. People with 8800GTX single cards have trouble running this on max settings at a good resolution and maintaining a 60FPS limit.

The graphics aren't even good enough to justify such horrible playability on mid-range systems. For some reason, the API plays better on a 6800GT than a 7600GT?

The guns are horribly inaccurate. It's to the point where you can't compensate the recoil by aiming differently. Remember in Deus Ex where in the beginning your aim sucks and you have to level up and put skill points in aim? Well in this game, it's like Deus Ex, only you can't level up, your aim just sucks.

Enemy AI is too buggy. You'll see an enemy 100 yards away and he'll try to shoot you from there. So it's a stand off from 100 yards where you're both out of each other's range, but you can't afford to move closer because they're basically aim bots and as soon as you get within kill range, you're dead. And even when you're out numbered, enemies won't chase you out of a room. They won't leave the room no matter what. So you can't force a bottleneck.

Allies AI is even worse. If you're behind a box, hiding for cover, and an ally is next to you and wants to move to your spot for a better position, he'll PUSH you out into the open where you're exposed. But no, it's not a REAL push, it's just him moving to your spot and bumping you out. The problem? You can't push back, so you're basically dead meat when that happens.

The game is too wide open. You find yourself running around not knowing whether you're following the story or not. You can't really follow the, "enemies = leading to further story" tactic either, because everywhere you go there's someone trying to kill you.

The "new areas" aren't that new at all. When you barely get into the game and you see the rainy dark destroyed city type of environment, get used to it, because it's all you're really going to see.

I was very disappointed, but what is there to expect? The game was supposed to come out in 2005. Back then it would've been great, or at least controversial.

As someone in a good review noted, "This game takes all these new ideas that would be great for an FPS, only it doesn't do any of them correctly, so what you get is this huge mess of incomplete ideas that doesn't seem to work well together."

This game is nothing like Far Cry. Far Cry's only problem was that it basically ran like crap on anything but god-like systems. One patch fixed the AI and the graphics API. This game has a lot more than those two problems.

Seriously.

Trying to figure this game out is like trying to read a novel that doesn't have any prepositional phrases in it: it just doesn't work smoothly, ever. I seriously can not play this game for more than 5 minutes without a MAJOR bug slapping me in the face. I feel like I'm playing a pre-alpha ti-83 game. Theres simply nothing this game does right, and I've been playing and giving it all the benefit of the doubt for 3 solid hours right now. I'm sincerely pissed I anxiously awaited this game for 3 months.

Guys I haven't even used the PDA. At least the only thing that I use is the map. Press "m" and it will show your location and direction, then your destination according to the mission.
It took me a little while to kill the bandits because I don't play it on easy.
However, I suggest using the silenced Russian military pistol when attacking the bandits.
Approach them by circling around the small village and flanking from the far side, near the military roadblock. This way you can get into the large two story house and kill the guys inside. The guy crouched on the floor has some information that you need for the mission, and you get it by searching his body.
After that I just waited for the other guys to come and killed them. There is a chokepoint next to the burning trashcan, and you just hang out with the double barrel shotgun. Men will come from upstairs and downstairs, so be ready!
If you didn't kill the group of ******* that wanted to help you, then start again and do so. Knife the first guy, then shoot the other two. You will get bandages, a silenced 9mm, a medikit, bread, and two shotguns, along with some ammo. Make sure you search every person that you kill, as they usually have weapons, ammo, and medical supplies. You can trade these for money, and I bet that's how you get through the military checkpoint. They charge 500 (whatever currency) to get through.
LOL I tried to fight them and they raped me

About the bugs:
That sucks, as I thought it was due to my 1Gb of RAM. I'm waiting for RMA, and the bastards are in Germany for CeBit so it's going to be awhile

What kind of "bugs" are you experiencing? Your system is well equipped, so I have a feeling that it is either the game or your OS. Try running a registry cleaner such as regsupreme pro and fix some registry errors. Also make sure to run error check on your HDD and defrag.
You might try running Spybot Search and Destroy. Also, get advanced system optimizer and run a registry defrag.
Try downloading MemTurbo and run a memory scrub and defrag (RAM) Make sure that you reboot after you scrub and defrag the RAM because it "robs" the XP kernal of RAM, attempting to recover as much as possible.
Also make sure that you aren't running any firewall, anti-virus, etc apps in the background. Check this by downloading Hijackthis. Google it, there is a new version. Another way is to just press CTRL+ALT+DEL and going to processes, then sort the processes by name. Under "user name" (your login) end everything except explorer.exe and taskman.exe. Also don't end any processes pertaining to graphics and sound drivers, such as CLI.exe, MOM.exe ( on 7.2 Catalyst), Skytel.exe (realtek NIC driver)

Alright so I complete the first mission, killed the bandits, and then as I leave the main guy's bomb-shelter-apartment, my PDA is no longer displaying objectives. I need to go to some railroad in a 30km zone and I have no way to see where the objective point is, no matter where, what or how many times I click ANYTHING in the PDA or map screens. Is anyone else having these problems?

Go back to camp and talk to the head stalker there, then take that POS mission where you kill the boars (I didn't take it). You also collect money from him for killing the bandits.
Then go to the trader where you first started the game. He will give you another mission, and you can trade all of the bandits guns with him. I bought some antirad from him.

After that the game gets fun
You meet some new guys and help them fight bandits, and he pays you too. Then you come across a group of bandits that all have machine guns, and they're tough. You're supposed to help some stalker and talk to him, and you fail the mission if he dies. I kept reloading because I wanted to complete the mission, so I'm stuck there. I'm playing BF2142 now!

BTW, update on settings. You can keep everything maxed out except the texture detail, which should be set to medium. I was getting great FPS even in the large bandit battle scenes.

I REALLY like this game, and if you're frustrated about how hard it is, remember that you should be cautious and use strategy instead of just running in guns blazing, especially if they have shotguns.
Remember to search all of the bodies you kill, and don't forget to get their guns, which are separate from their inventory.

I just finished playing it for a couple hours. My impressions are that the game has a lot going for it but definitely lacks polish. I haven't experienced any problems with it bugs so far other than minor stuff like people getting stuck running on invisible things. One of my major gripes is as stated earlier the weapons are woefully inaccurate. Even with the AK-47 it is pure random chance whether you hit someone at ranges exceeding 45 feet. The shotgun is useful out to about literally 8 feet. Also just carrying around a pistol, AK-47, shotgun, food, medical supplies, and antirad takes up about 2/3 of your carry weight. The game isn't terribly hard as long you remember to watch your health and take cover. I run it smoothly at 1360x768 2xAA, shadows on grass off, grass density down one notch and everything else on maximum.
